Sgt. T.J. Grady, of the Tinley Park police department said that the authorities were trying to contact relatives of the dead before identifying them.

In Tinley Park, which is about 30 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, police received a 911 call at 10:44 a.m. Saturday, Sergeant Grady said in a televised news conference. When officers arrived at the shop, a Lane Bryant store, they found “multiple victims shot and killed,” he said.

It was uncertain Saturday afternoon whether others were injured.

The police here said they were searching for a man — wearing a winter waist length coat, blue jeans and a knit cap — in connection to the shooting. Officers could be seen canvassing the nearby shops and the rest of the center, sometimes carrying their weapons out of their holsters as they peered into parked cars. Search dogs were brought in, and at least one police helicopter flew overhead.

“It appears that the offender has left the area,” Sergeant Grady said, adding that the authorities were seeking assistance from the public.

He offered no motive for the shooting.
