Hate crimes' label sought for assaults

Community groups and anti-racism advocates are calling for police and politicians to address a series of assaults against Asian-Canadians as hate crimes.

They plan to make the demand at a press conference this morning in response to an article in yesterday's Star, which revealed a disturbing practice happening around the small town of Sutton on Lake Simcoe.

Locals have dubbed it "nippertipping" and say it's been going on for years.

Typically, young adults drive around in the middle of the night seeking out Asian fisherman standing near piers and bridges. Then they'll push them into the water and sometimes steal or damage their fishing gear.

Avvy Go, a lawyer with the Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, said the goal of today's press conference is to get police to do their job.

"To us, it's pretty obvious that there is a race connection to it and in fact I would call it a hate crime.

"I don't know how much clearer it can be when people are describing this as `nippertipping,'" she said.

Three incidents have been reported since April, but fishermen say that the majority of cases go unreported.

Now, police are investigating whether an incident two weeks ago — which led to a car chase and landed two in hospital and one in jail — is the area's fourth.

Police say that of the confirmed cases, not all of the victims are Asian. They don't believe certain races are being targeted.

racism or just a random target?
in small town there are very few asians and its believable that asians can b a threat to their society leading to hatred. This is just beyond stupid pushing fishermen in the water, if they cannot swim then they will die which is murder.
