Just curious, has anyone here been affected by the recent world wide bad economic turn? From job loss, to salary reduction, or no pay furloughs to less hours; what are your stories? Please take the Poll. If you're a kid and have never yet worked, answer for your Mom and Dad (or other adult person that works to supports you). Also, are there any jobs out there that you would consider economically "safe" or recession proof? What are they, where are they, and what's the pay? Take a look at this recent article, on how some people are moving to protect themselves in this volatile and uncertain economy, would you consider doing the same?:

In a rush? For a quick synopsis, just read the red highlighted lines.

i didnt vote because none of the options above apply for me...
atm i am jobless (by choice) i had a very stable job in australia but decided to leave because i prefered to return back to NL...
Anyway, i can def tell it is harder to get the kind of job i desire because employers have higher requirements however, it's not hard to find A job....
If i wanted to i could be working now as like sales PA or whatever...
its not the best time to be jobless in NL but i think this crisis is not affecting me that much directly...YET.... we never know what will happen later on but for now it seems as if its alright...

So, since its harder for me to get the kind of job i desire with the degree + lack of experience i have
i have come to the conclusion that its better for me to study for a few more years....

Cheeks, in many ways, your statement mirrors what a lot of graduates in HK experienced years ago (when HK's boom went bust), where well educated (but no exp) job seekers had to settle for low paying menial and manual labor. It was so well acknowledged that even native television often found dark humor in it. I fear that this is what the world economy is going to be like for years to come; that newly graduated people will have to settle for a lot less too. Frankly, I'm not too hopeful that going back to school will be that much of a help either, as thousands of others are doing much the same. The competition is still going to be fierce.

^yeah i am aware of that.... but when i was still in college it was pretty easy to get a quite okay job with that degree now that everyones getting desperate a lot of that is gone....
the shitty jobs are left n i dont wanna do a 9-5 everyday n end up being unhappy because i dont like the work that im doing....

i am planning to study to become an english teacher here n i know ur article mentioned that science n math teachers are safest but im quite confident that i should be okay la :p....
in the end i dont have much to lose since most of my education would be funded by the government....

i'll be honest... i have virtually no remorse for a lot of the jobless in middle america... when autoworkers make $90k a year + benefits while school teachers barely make $35k a year even in rich rich Cali where atleast 50% of our taxes go to education... something is fcked up... now these same guys in middle america are moaning about doing manual labor jobs at $12 an hour? or how they have to retrain themselves to get $20 an hour as a pharmacist tech in about 6months? they can go fck themselves...

current situation is different from what happened in HK... people in HK were highly educated... most people in America that are laid off and can't find jobs, aren't... instead they sit back and wait for our socialist welfare programs that Obama's promised to pick them right back up... bail out the auto industry? hah... no...

I hope the deep recession doesn't last more than 2 yrs... I heard that a normal recession cycle would last about 12 to 18 months.

Also, it is very depressing to see:

    1) students with high education but no job (due to no experience); and must pay their student loan within certain period of time after graduation.

    2) workers who works very hard for a company for years got kicked because the recession and political reasons.

    Best of luck to everyone!

^ in uk.....you dun need to start paying student loans till you earn over £15K so if you get a crap job...that doesnt pay technically ya dun have to pay it off yet then....

angieee...if you wanna be a math/science teacher the govnment gives you more funding
espesh if ya teach it at secondary school level kids ages 12-16....not sure if same in nl though...

i looked in to going abroad to teach engrish like in japan or something coz that would be
    ubbbbber cool....but i hate engrish....all them nouns/adjectives blah blah...i dun think i even
    know them nows....>.<..but good lucky..!!

Really depends on the sector you are working in. The economy crisis haven't affected me yet, but I just got a big raise. So I'm not sure what I can say about it.

^i saw the story about the father and his 5 kids on the news.. it's so sad.-cry2
but.. the news showed footage of their house in cali and it looks like they lived in an upscale neighborhood, so i don't understand why he couldn't just sell his house and move to a place where housing is cheaper...? >.<
