For Hawick Lau (劉愷威), playing a “second-generation rich boy” must seem like second nature. His role in the upcoming drama Across Heaven and Earth <風雲天地> certainly fits the bill, but Hawick is nevertheless excited at the challenge of playing such a multifaceted character, especially one that is “hiding a dark side.”

Directed, produced, and written by Wong Jing (王晶), Across Heaven and Earth is the story of Kwan Yeuk Nam (Liza Wang 汪明荃) and how she singlehandedly raised her three sons and adopted daughter to carry on her deceased husband’s business. Hawick plays Cho Chi Yuen, the second son, who is initially uninterested in business matters and content with quietly supporting his mother and elder brother, Cho Chi Wang (Kenny Wong 黃德斌). However, after his girlfriend falls ill and passes away, he throws himself into his career, leading to a dispute with Chi Wang, the original heir to the company. Chi Yuen is framed and thrown into jail, where he vows to get his revenge.

According to Hawick, Cho Chi Yuen goes through many changes, making the role more of a challenge. “The changes in Cho Chi Yuen’s life make him a little absent-minded later,” he shared. “When he’s weak and hesitant, a sort of ‘inner demon’ will come out. I haven’t played this type of morbid role before, so I think it will be rather difficult.”

Nevertheless, Hawick embraces this challenge because he has always preferred playing roles that are “hiding a dark side.” He said, “I feel that playing these roles is very satisfying.”

After establishing his own studio and becoming a producer, Hawick seizes every opportunity to learn new things when working with other crew teams. Acting, however, remains his first love. “It’s quite lucky to be an actor,” he said. “You can experience other people’s experiences, and you can even try things you would never have imagined.

“To me, acting is more and more a way for me to express my feelings. I’m more reserved and will rarely show my mood, but acting is a good channel. For example, every time I do a crying scene or get into a very fierce argument, I will feel very comfortable afterward, because I will have set free the feelings inside me.”
