Within days after completing his debut producing effort, Clear Midsummer Night <盛夏晚晴天>, Hawick Lau (劉愷威) rushed to Wuxi Film Studios to dawn the iconic headgear and fan costume for the role of famous scholar, Tang Bohu, in Zhejiang Satellite Television’s new comedy drama, The Four Scholars of Jiangnan <江南四大才子>. Produced by Zhejiang Satellite Television and Zhejiang Greentown Culture and Media, The Four Scholars of Jiangnan is directed by Stephen Chow’s (周星馳) longtime collaborator, Lee Lik Chi (李力持). The script is helmed by famous mainland Chinese scriptwriter, Zou Jingzhi (邹静之), who is best known for his work in Kangxi Weifu Sifang Ji <康熙微服私访记> and The Bronze Teeth <铁齿铜牙纪晓岚>, both which starred award-winning actor, Zhang Guoli (张国立). The Four Scholars of Jiangnan is the comedy duo’s first collaboration, and expressed that they are very honored to be able to work on a period drama version of “Gangnam Style” (江南STYLE)! The Four Scholars of Jiangnan takes place in the early 1500′s Ming Dynasty, during the reign of the reckless and foolish Zhengde Emperor. The emperor’s eunuchs, led by the powerful Liu Jin, are gaining power through the emperor’s weakening reign, and it is up to the four Jiangnan scholars to stop the corrupted officials from further harming the country and its citizens. The period comedy drama stars Hawick Lau as “Tang Bohu,” Chi Shuai (迟帅) as “Zhu Zhishan,” Li Li (李立) as “Wen Zhengming,” and Gao Hao (高昊) as “Xu Zhengqing.” Also starring is Zhang Li (张俪) as Tang’s love interest “Chouxiang,” Huang Ziwen (黄子文) as Tang’s other not-as-willing love interest “Shiliu,” Su Zaiqiang (苏在强) as the stubborn but noble scholar-official, “Mr. Hua,” Yuen Qiu (元秋) as a madam, and Elvis Tsui (徐錦江) as the evil “Prince Ning.” Filming commenced in Wuxi Film Studios on October 10, and the drama is expected to film in various locations in China for the next three months.
