Since this is becoming a huge topic today, I just wanted to wonder where everyone else stands about this topic. HDTV is slowly shifting towards taking over old analog TVs, and in the next few years, I believe HDTV will take over nearly 100% of the market since broadcasting stations are all slowly shifting their equipment into the expensive HDTV stuff. What I want to discuss here is which is your favourite, and why? Which sucks? DLP vs LCD vs PLASMA. Top choice for me right now is DLP. With the LED DLP TVs, I feel a lot safer about the "rainbow-effect" usual lamp TVs face, more specifically in Plasmas. If it didn't come with a 2000$ price tag, I'd go out and buy myself a 56" Samsung LED-DLP TV right now! But despite DLPs being a very big competitor to LCDs and Plasmas in terms of quality/size/price, I always wonder why retailers seem to push LCD and Plasma sales and neglect DLPs. Just something that bugs me since I'm a DLP fan. What are your opinions on which is best?
i think lcd's and plasmas are better than dlp's. the reason why i think this is because for one lcd's and plasmas r smaller than dlp's. quality of the picture looks more better than a dlp tv. dlp tv's take longer to turn on. lamp in a dlp can get mis-align and that needs to be serviced. it would be more easier to carry a 70in lcd or plasma up 3 flights of stairs than a dlp. this happened to me at a customers house. last flight of stairs lead to the attic and was so narrow and had to make a 90 degree turn.
im not gonna comment on the dlps.. but between plasma and lcd, well... picture wise, id go with plasma.. but im not too fancy about plasma... for one thing, once that thing is obsolete, youre left with a thing thats bad for environment, (not that lcds dont, but theyre less harmful)
i would pick LCD, because you are more likely to get a burn in from picture from a plasma tv, and also the glass reflects alot more light then LCD do, when put in a bright room
burn ins are really not a problem with modern plasmas, but plasmas eat a lot of electricity and they get hot...
LCD's cuz i have a 40" 1080p one and i love it, i set it up as a monitor for a while and the clarity was incredible, unfortunately my room is too small to fit a chair and its too uncomfortable to use a keyboard and mouse in bed for more than an hour .
LCDs fail miserably in displaying blacks as well as producing great contrast ratios. Plasmas and DLP produces better colors without a doubt. DLPs are plenty popular, it's popular enough that it sells itself. That's why marketing is shifting to LCD and Plasmas. On another note, plasmas and LCDs can be made noticably thinner... they can even be wall mounted to conserve space if you don't have a lot of room. Also think money, the more expensive an item is, usually means the bigger the markup, and the more $$$ the seller makes.
I've got a Benq DLP PE 7700 projector rather than a rear projection TV. At 1280 X 720 it's not full HD, but at the normal viewing distance of 6 metres, the image (which is 2 metres across the diagonal) displaying a HD TV signal is staggeringly good. My media room can be completely enclosed during the day, so of course being pitch black helps considerably with the brightness, contrast and colour saturation. It runs rings around any LCD projector I've seen, and has far better image quality than any Plasma Screen I've looked at. There is no issue at all with the rainbow effect with these newer models either because the colour wheel is spinning 6 times faster than the earlier ones. I use it mostly to watch Music DVD's and some of the recent digital video recordings make it feel like you're there. No doubt the 1.3 Kw (RMS) of audio contributes to that feeling as well. It's actually better than being in a theatre, which I find amazing. Obviously I vote DLP. I can't wait to get a 1920 x 1080 version, but hopefully soon they'll start using high brightness LED's like the luxeons for the light source and that will cut down considerably on the amount of power they consume. A 250 watt lamp is not cheap to run. As for why retailers push the other technology, I think that's probably closely related to the fact that the salesman gets a higher commission for selling LCD's and Plasma - that's the way it happens down under anyway.
^ i also have a benq, but i forgot with model.. if you want a projection to be crystal clear, go grab a screen thats silver coated.. rather than just the normal white screen we usually have, the silver coated one saturates, and reflects the light in such a way that its much clearer... i do believe imax cinemas are using such screens..
LCD v Plasma is just like 360 v PS3!! I have had both and both in HD, I would pick LCD, as my current TV is the Sony KDL46X2000 and I have my 360 Elite, PS3, wii, SkyHD, Sony DVD running through it at the PQ is second to none. Had a Panasonic plasma which is now in my bedroom and the PQ is no match for the Sony. But as I said - the debate will go on!!!!
