Well, do you listen to Cantonese music? I think watching the K/MTV of the song is a great way to learn one by one. Of course nobody "run before they walk". ;)

Get someone to "read" the newspaper with you, OUT LOUD. That also helps with proper pronunciation...

As for actually learning to write them characters... It's a painfully long saga...

    well.... hm...
i think its best to get one of those little textbook from HK
like the ones for primary schools those are the ones to start with and get sometapes
if u know how to write then its easy to read
just learning to read is difficult i think

Yes, chinese classes. They're usually listed in extra-cirricular brochures from board of education. I took a few years of it at my elementary school. Anybody can attend. It was free.

tbh unless your gonna devote a lot of time to this, you wont get far (in my opinion)

i went to chinese school (like sunday school) for many years and i can just about get away with reading chinese. writing is another level....

The only reason i can even read chinese, is cause of basic stuff from chinese school and listening to songs and reading the lyrics and reading TVB subtitles

but if your just gonna self-learn, part time, your prob only gonna be able to do the basics like numbers and animals and objects
