Hi,all. I am doing a paper for my english class(focused on race/racial issues etc.) on how assimilated Asian-Americans are in modern America. And am wondering if you could help me by taking a part in my research. -^_^ Below is a set of questions that I've come up with (first time doing a questionaire so if you have any advice or suggestions for more questions that would help me then I'd gladly accept them):
For all of the questions, you can just PM me if you don't feel comfortable posting in the thread.
    (pre: What is your nationality?)
    01. Do your parents speak english? And if they do, do they use it more than their native language? If they don't, then have they tried to learn it?
    02. Were you born in America? Or did you move to the US? And if so then how old were you?
    03. Do you(and your siblings?) speak your native language? Can you read and write it fluently?
    04. What kind of food do you usually eat at home and outside?
    05. What is the religion that your family follow?(if applicable)
    06. If your parents own a business then did they faced any problems, when they were trying to open a business? Was it because of their race?
    07. Have you experienced any racism in school? Or even in your work place? Or the people around you treats you like you're no different from them?

If you're not Asian then please answer following:
    (pre: What is your nationality?)
    01. What is your opinion/attitude towards Asian-Americans?
    02. Do you have asian friends? Have you visited their house? Was your experience 'normal,' or was it unpleasant? If so, how?
    03. Have you tried asian dishes? Did you like it? Did someone recommened it(were they the same race as you?) or did you take it upon yourself to try?

    Questions for everyone:
    01. What do you think of inter-racial marriage?
    02. Do you think that it is possible for asians to assimilate into American culture/society as much as Europeans/Italians/Irish etc. have?
    03. And your age, you don't have to be specific(just under 18, 20's, 30's) unless you don't mind.

Your feedbacks would be greatly appreciated.
I know this is quite a lot of questions, but maybe while you're downloading the movies that the nice people are posting in the other part of the forum, you can spare some time answering these questions? ^^

-sorry, if it is in the wrong place

    01. Do your parents speak english? And if they do, do they use it more than their native language? If they don't, then have they tried to learn it?
My parents are horrible in english, they've tried to learn itbut they still suck lol

    02. Were you born in America? Or did you move to the US? And if so then how old were you?
    Born and raised in Canada

    03. Do you(and your siblings?) speak your native language? Can you read and write it fluently?

my siblings are fluent.. I'm sorta fluent. I can read/write a few words.

    04. What kind of food do you usually eat at home and outside?

Asian food at home.. when i'm out it can be anything.

    05. What is the religion that your family follow?(if applicable)

    My parents are Buddhist.

    06. If your parents own a business then did they faced any problems, when they were trying to open a business? Was it because of their race?

Financial problems, yes. Racism, I don't know.

    07. Have you experienced any racism in school? Or even in your work place? Or the people around you treats you like you're no different from them?

Yeah, when I was younger I've heard one or two racial slurs thrown at me, not very often though.

Now that i'm older, no one has ever used racial slurs towards me but I do feel that some people do treat me differently because of the colour of my skin.

    Questions for everyone:
    01. What do you think of inter-racial marriage?
As long as it isn't because of some sick fetish for a certain race, then im ok with it.
eg. You only date ppl that are white/black/hispanic/asian cos u think they are hot/exotic/etc. <-- Big nono.

    02. Do you think that it is possible for asians to assimilate into American culture/society as much as Europeans/Italians/Irish etc. have?
Yeah it's possible for any race, it just takes time.
but will whites acknowledge asians living in North America as true Americans/Canadians? I honestly think that will never happen and if it does it will be a LONGGG ass time before it does.

    Goodluck with your research.

Very interesting topic. I'll be glad to help you:

    CHINESE
    01. Do your parents speak english? And if they do, do they use it more than their native language? If they don't, then have they tried to learn it?
Yes, they speak English now, quite fleunt, have gotten educations here, which is rare for immigrants of their generation. Most of my other CBC friends have uneducated parents who own businesses (small shops, stores, grocery markets, restaurants) and thus using Chinese to conduct business, or who do factory work (which does not require much speaking of English), and therefore cannot speak English very well. *When I say uneducated, I mean not having university/college degrees. Uneducated is not a bad thing - I am aware that not every immigrant had the opportunity to study.

    02. Were you born in America? Or did you move to the US? And if so then how old were you?
Canada -> yes, first generation, CBC.

    03. Do you(and your siblings?) speak your native language? Can you read and write it fluently?
Yes, fluent, and I take passion in learning to speak/read/write Chinese. I am proud of who I am, and these days, I find it harder and harder to relate to caucasian - I find myself more with asians.
But I noticed that further down the line in the family, the language is 'lost'. Ex. I know people who are the youngest in their families, and they dont know one single bit of Chinese, whereas the eldest is quite fluent. The main reason for this is b/c of older siblings speaking English to the younger one and also b/c the parents will have gained a stable foundation in English, thus speaking more ENglish to the youngest sibling.
In general, if your parent's English is horrible, then your Chinese will be good.
If your parent's English is quite good, then your Chinese will not be as good.

    04. What kind of food do you usually eat at home and outside?
Chinese. But for breakfast and lunch (on weekdays), its white b/c no offence, Chinese breakfast is kinda unhealthy lol.... no real nutrients that will kickstart your day.

    07. Have you experienced any racism in school? Or even in your work place? Or the people around you treats you like you're no different from them?
Yes. I have expeienced obscured and underlying racial discrimination at work/school b/c where I live, the Chinese population is not very large compared to Toronto and Vancouver. When I was younger, I was very much affected by the racial discrimination that I even wish I was white. But these days, I just brush it off, and I don't give a shit about ppl who are going to judge me just because of my race, as I have finally learned to have/show pride.

    01. What do you think of inter-racial marriage?
Nothing wrong with it in general.
Personally, though, I couldn't go through with an inter-racial marriage - as in me and white. Interacial-Dating is okay, but not interracial marriage for me. I will only stay within Asian - want to stay pure haha.

Well, in my opinion, I think that Chinese-Canadians are less assimilated than Chinese-Americans. For some reason, whenever I go to the States to vacation, there seems to be this great anti-cultural feeling... everyone (including Immigrants) wants to be "american" - whatever that is. I think it's sad that the States doesn't promote a cultural mosaic like Canada, but instead, a melting pot. Sure, there are districts of Little Italies, China Towns, etc., but it's not pure. And I don't know how to explain what I mean by pure, but its just not the same as the Chinatowns in Canada. For example, when I was in the States once, the Chinese and Viet restaurants I went to didn't have chopsticks or bowls (they only had forks/knives and plates), and their food was cooked for white people (which of course is disgusting) - not one single bit authentic. The owners spoke little Chinese, even though they were immigrants! They seemed to have forgotten it or whatever, and mainly speak English to eachother.

Asian-Assimilation in Canada, I believe, is personal choice, whereas in the States, it is forced upon you. Regardless of that, I still think it is very important for Overseas Chinese to stand strong and withstand assimilation.
Assimilation also depends on the strength of the community around you. For example, I've noticed that CBCs in Toronto are less assimilated than those in say, a small town, because of the heavy influence/bond of the Chinese community around them.

sorry for the long post, but again, good topic:)
I have so many observations of various CBC families who have endured varying levels of assimilation. You can PM me if u want.
