炸 [zha2] fry in deep fat or oil; deep-fry
炸 [zha4] explode... etc

try the njstar program, it has a decent dictionary. i use it to confirm pinyin too =) there is also www.zhongwen.com that is online dictionary, it has pronounciation for various dialects if you go far enough.

maybe you hear it as zha4 because its a more familiar pronounciation? just hypothesizing.
it could potentially also be a case of 懶音.

Thanks for your help :D But I'm still confused :(

For example, when you say "deep fried chicken"...its "zhà yì"

But when you say "deep fried tofu"..its "zhá dòu "

Is it only zhà when used with chicken? :p Or am I totally off?
