I have friends who are international students. I imagine the same can be said for many people on this forum. I cannot even become to describe the disgust I feel towards Hershey's. None of this is right and they should be held responsible for their actions.

im sure there woulda been details of where they were going, and to think that you'd get something in an area like that - maybe not

Suggestion: Boycott Hershey products. I never liked chocolate anyway, and I like exploitation even less.

what doesn't make sense is that these are like undergraduate students (based on the guy who said he was an economics grad, and the med student) and yet they didn't check to make sure the fine details of this program. Wasn't the wage supposed to be posted? What about housing (if they were to live in the hershey's residence, or if not, like outside residence)? I mean it's too bad that hershey has been exploiting int'l students (for who knows how long), but at the same time no one should ever take things for granted.

i still don't buy hershey's chocolates though. i prefer ritter sports or lindt.

But there are a lot of companies so take advantage of international or immigrant workers. PEople need to wake up and know their rights and who they are worknig for.

True, but the difference here is how this particular J1 visa program was offered. These are not supposed to be "workers" per se, seeking employment. Rather their program was touted as a chance to explore the US while gaining gaining work experience (read as management) and be paid for their time. This entire program was presented like a college or university student exchange program, which students paid to get into.

Instead, when the students got here, they were put to doing uneducated work making minimum wage. Hershey supposedly knew about this for years. But since the federal government is now talking about investigations, they're now saying that students can be given vacations and tours of US landmarks. A little too late, IMHO.

Further, if these students are used in the plant, they should be given at least the same wages and benefits as union employees, and that is the crux of the issue. Hershey sought to avoid the high wages and benefits earned by regular workers which is why they conceived this program in the first place. They're essentially trying to do an end run around US labor laws.

One then begins to realize how important unions are in the US, in terms of protecting workers from exactly this kind of mistreatment and employment abuse.

    Boycott Hershey

Well, that's not necessarily true. They learned how abusive, unfair and uncaring American corporations can be; even long standing very famous ones.

Never buying from Hersheys again. Kinda sad to see this type of employment especially in the US, usually we hear this in China or Africa but wow,

Done. Never buying Hershey products again. I cannot not even begin to imagine how I'd feel if I were in their shoes.

I don't buy anything Hershey for a very long, long time. Their chocolate sucks anyway.

I am not surprised by the exploitation. The more famous the company is, the likelihood of abuse and exploitation is higher. Why? These coms are masked by their power and status in society in general.

REading the fine prints doesn't help much here because when you're in a foreign land, language and assistance are an issue. You're practically at their mercy sorta speak. Of course, you can leave too and forget the money .. that's always an option.
