Damn thats messed up. What are the motives? or maybe he is just plain crazy. They pretty much have a new case every 2 months. What would drive a person to such a disgusting act? society? love? someone who hates life? Very disturbing to think someone could throw acid at random strangers.

Police in Hong Kong say a man arrested after Saturday's acid attack on people in a crowded street market has been ruled out as a suspect.

Nine tourists and a child were among 30 people injured in the attack.

The latest attack was at the Temple Street night market when two bottles were thrown.

Officers say the man they had found hiding on a roof top was wanted in connection with a completely unrelated offence, and had not been involved in the attack.

More than 100 people have been injured in similar attacks since December 2008 when bottles of acid were dropped from buildings in a pedestrian zone.

In December, six people were injured when a bottle of acid was thrown down a street in Causeway Bay.

Indeed. For those that are interested in serial crimes and the pathology behind them; time will tell, but I believe this to be classic event and bears careful watching.

I'm sure that there is a legion of criminal psychologists working this case. IMHO, it may be likely similar to the Thrill Seeking Arsonist with a Hero Complex, where the culprit is actually someone within the fire service itself; this may turn out to be someone in authority getting the chance to play hero in helping the crowd.ยน Alternatively it may be some professional but low level functionary on the margins, who feels incompetent and emasculated, and is thus silently raging at society. I would not be surprised it it turns out to be a old beat cop or security guard, one who was career wise, passed over for promotion or recognition many times.

That he or she cannot stop is already evident in that this is the sixth event. I highly doubt that a copycat would have the same skill set in avoidance of detection. It's like the subject is almost compelled to repeatedly perform with full knowledge that the police has a large presence in search of him or her. I'm assuming that the high profile risk nature of this crime is actually feeding into the assailant's ego. The more the police pile on in terms of manpower and time, the more satisfaction s/he feels. Further, despite the added police presence, it is also telling that the suspect has escaped every time. This leads me to suspect that it may be someone who is unusually familiar with law enforcement procedures and investigation techniques, or one with access to such guarded information.

The flip side is, what would aggravate this mindset is if the authorities seemingly ignored or gave limited attention to the act; treat the victims, short but not extensive news coverage, and barely a mention on one of the inner pages towards the back of a newspaper, et cetera; would likely drive the suspect crazy. I'm sure that whenever they catch this girl or guy (and they will because of the obsessive nature of it), they will become the subject of intense psychological review for years to come, much like that Berkowitz character of Son of Sam infamy.

My sympathies for the victims, as well as for a city that I love. I hope they catch him or her soon.

    1. Arsonist who is, was, or wants to be a fireman; or works for fire service, secretly sets fire, and then sounds alarm so that he may be lauded as hero.
