http://www.thestar.com/GTA/Crime/article/575363 so what would you if your house got invaded? do you have any weapons to protect yourself? do you have a plan? would you confront the people? I don't live in the safest neighbourhoods and i don't have a gun or machette but now im thinkin of gettin something for protection. But if this happen i thingk i would do something about it and confront them but still depends on the situation. getting dangerous everyday
My house is full of makeshift weapons in every room...so I could kill someone if that happens to me...
Don't flash or flaunt your shit; that's how these things usually start. Often, "friends" of friends find out that you got the latest in whatever, or everyone in the household has their own iphone, computer, flat panel TV, et cetera. This sort of public advertising is usually an invitation to get robbed. I'm not saying to don't live your life, just don't do it so publicly. Kids have to also realize that they live in the real world where bad things happen. Answering the front door could be your death. I know most people don't want to think that way, but what if the 14 year old had the presence of mind to first look through the peephole, and then called police instead? Home security gates over the doors and windows; while some consider these thing unsightly, they offer a high level of anti push in protection that nothing else even comes close to. Install a panic alarm, a loud piercing bank type alarm right next to your front door that you can press in the event of an emergency. Most assailants generally flee when confronted with such devices because it's beyond their control. They worry that neighbors will hear the alarm and call police. Very obviously placed video camera domes; even if they're empty, they dissuade potential thieves. Put up decals for home security agencies, trumpeting "24 hour off site hard drive back up video recordings" (even if it's not true). Don't trust anyone, especially your "friends" or relatives. While they may enter and exit your house on a routine basis, they don't need to know the ins and outs of your security arrangements; when you're going to be going on vacation etc. Be especially on your guard if they seem nosier than usual. If you're going to buy a weapon, don't do so unless you've seriously thought about what it takes to kill someone. If you don't have it in you, then don't buy it. It would be just another weapon for the criminal to take away from you. Personally, I think the case cited above was done by people who were familiar to the teens, knew what they had, and when the least number of people were home. Most push in robberies are generally preceded with some form of intelligence gathering by the criminal, which goes back to one really having to be careful about who one brings into the home. Nothing is perfect, but if you seriously take a hard look at how you can keep yourself safer, then you're already beginning to protect yourself better.
^ .. I agree with ralph .. these bros were obviously targeted by some known friends/acquaintants who knew that no one else was home beside the two. Another thing to suspect was that these kids must have flash expensive things and told everyone else the parents aren't home ... Anyway, I just want to say that reqardless of whether you gonna get a weapon (gun or some sort), don't tell people about it. Alarm is important regardless of where you live; safe neighborhood or not; no where is SAFE. Hide and use your weapon appropriately based on the circumstance cuz you don't wanna be the one getting hurt at the end. Like the story above, nothing the kids could have done beside calling the police. A gun could've killed one or two but there were 10 robbers .. hello .. not to mention that they have a gun too so you may end up dead. I think it's not what weapon you have, but whether you react wisely so that you or your family will not get hurt at the end. I know taekwondo but I don't tell people I know at all and I am not gonna kick someone's ass if s/he stick a gun at me unless I know I can disarm him/her confidently. No matter how good you are, you can't be faster than a bullet.
