In the case described, the patient is afflicted with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), which primarily affects the integrity and function of skeletal muscle. Penile engorgement is functionally dependent upon the actions of smooth muscle, such that impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED) is usually not present with DMD. Despite the puns and humor, ongoing research has indicated that Viagra (Sildenafil) may perhaps prolong the life of those afflicted with DMD by promoting the preservation of cyclic GMP in cardiac muscle tissue, allowing the heart (which is progressively weakened in DMD) to receive better blood flow. Animal studies have suggested that this may help prevent the cardiac failure that eventually kills these patients. While the story elicits prurient interests, what I found to be of greater significance was the political; that is, a church hospice (ie. religion based or funded organization) would actually allow for this "treatment" and do so publicly. Just about every religion affiliated medical facility that I know of would have probably refused to participate in such an event. On the lighter side, I personally consider it a good thing that the guy finally got a piece of ass before punching out. They should do this for everyone. I wonder if the HMO's would cover it? Kudos to the young man and the ppl that support him. Hopefully that more ppl will be aware of this issue and offer support instead of treating them as abnormal.
