Hospital sucks!

The mother of a boy who had to undergo blood tests after receiving treatment at a Vegreville hospital is outraged at the East Central Health authority - and the town of Vegreville itself.

Landa O'Neil's seven-year-old son, Khoal, received three stitches at St. Joseph's General Hospital last fall after hitting his head while roughhousing at school.

O'Neil said she didn't think much of the incident until June, when hospital staff told her Khoal was one of almost 3,000 people who may have been exposed to HIV, and hepatitis B and C through improperly sterilized equipment.

'REALLY UPSET'

"Obviously I'm really upset," she said. "I'm really annoyed with the people in Vegreville."

She said that during the year and a half she lived in Vegreville, no one told her to avoid the hospital - even though they did so themselves.

"People knew (but) nobody thought to say anything," said O'Neil, who now lives in Red Deer.

On July 25, the Health Quality Council of Alberta released a report indicating that basic sterilization standards at the hospital were ignored, as were repeated requests from the health authority to improve the situation.

The report led to the resignation of the East Central Health authority's entire board, but O'Neil feels that more should be done.

"These are people's lives they're screwing with," she said, adding that legal action should be taken against those who knew what was happening and did nothing to stop it.

RISK VERY LOW

Alberta Health and Wellness spokesman Shannon Haggarty said the risk of infection is very low and if people do test positive, it can't be known whether they picked up a disease at St. Joseph's or if they were carrying it before.

Within the Canadian population, between 0.7% and 0.9% of people will test positive for hepatitis B and 2% will test positive for hepatitis C, while 0.2% of the population will test positive for HIV.

Haggarty said anyone who tests positive will receive support from an infectious disease specialist, regardless of whether they contracted the disease at St. Joseph's or elsewhere.

"The government has taken action to deal with the problem," she said.

But it's little comfort to O'Neil, who now waits anxiously for Khoal's test results.

"I'm trying to stay positive and not worry about it," she said. "One in 3,000? I don't like those odds."

Hopefully the kid will not be tested positive for anything. That would be sad if he does and he's only 7 >.<

that's why I am still skeptical getting shots from the hospital despite the advancement in medical technology...they can't even clean their needles properly...
