    Bonjour!

I would like to ask any NYC or NYC area PA'ers how to best maximize a short time in NYC. I will be in the metropolitan area from May 21-23rd over the weekend with my brother and since I have a short time I want to know things I should be seeing and doing and places I should be eating!!

I will be staying here: http://www.intercontinentalnybarclay.com/

Which puts me right in the Midtown east area so I should be within walking distance of a lot of things.

Any tips/tricks for traveling in NYC? -batman

there are a few gentlemen's club to go to.....if the wtc was still here, that would be awesome....dont think u would wanna visit chinatowns (lower east manhataan, flushing...etc) because i'm pretty sure it's the same everywhere....broadway (for shopping)....34th street, times square, MSG......Central park...aquarium...planetarium..museums...basically the whole f-ing midtown manhattan is where tourists go and have fun 24 hrs....

You know, that's really a very open ended question where it all depends on you. NYC has just about anything that you would want. YOU need to tell us what you're into. That said, if it were me, I would visit the museums (like the Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art, et cetera), but a younger person may find that to be boring to tears. Statue of Liberty is always an iconic sight see "must" for the tourist, though again, younger people may not care about that. The Village (ie East Village and Greenwich Village) or SOHO, are good spots for hanging out, but if you're only there for two days, you don't have that luxury time wise. I would suggest that you avoid bars and any alcohol as that sort of milieu will only make you sleep. Also, carry your wallet in your front pocket and never publicly count your money. If you see card tricks being performed on the street, immediately walk away.

Oh, and BTW: HOP KEE is a place that has been there since the beginning of time. Food is good and prices are reasonable.

hahaha I know it's pretty open ended question.

Good advice though, I want to check out Soho, but I doubt I'll have time :(

I'm pretty open minded about the stuff that other 23 year olds might consider 'boring'. I'd like to spend at least 2 hours in the Museum of Natural History.

I will definitely be checking out the WTC site and empire state building. I'm not sure if its worth going out to the statue of liberty though, just because of how much time it will take... I'm still debating about that one.

Hop Kee is a nice suggestion, I've also heard of Joe's Shanghai and Peking Duck House restaurants... have you tried either of these?

Oh also, i never carry things in my back pockets :p I'm super paranoid already, even without living in a big city.

  6. As per usual... you would be doing quite a bit of walking so wear shorts.. i made the mistake one day to wear jeans.... worst decision ever. Central Park, Times Square, Julliard has performances everyday/night, Grand Central Station: (The new apple store).... lots to see and do....

I haven't tried either, but that doesn't mean that you can't. If someone had told you that they're good, then they generally are.

Regarding the museums however, two hours at the Museum of Natural History is almost akin to an oxymoron; it's impossible to only spend two hours there, unless you're specifically looking to see only one exhibit. If you're into museums, that place can be a huge time trap. You won't realize that you just wasted an entire day until they're throwing you out, LOL...

As for wearing shorts; I would be a bit hesitant. During the day, it may seem like sound advice, especially if you're walking a lot and working up a sweat. However, if you happen to stay out a bit late, mid May can still get a little chilly. I would suggest that you wear comfortable, baggy loose clothing, but keep the long pants. Avoid tight jeans as it decreases your circulation and the pockets are near useless. Also bring a light wind breaker that you can tie around your waist, but wear if it gets cool. And of course, a medium sized knapsack with water bottle holder is a general must have as it allows you to bring personal items that are cumbersome to carry. It can also function as a souvenir reservoir; ie a place to stash all the things you bought and still have your hands free. If you're like me, you can also pack one or two MRE's and power bars, if the tourist trap food prices are too steep, ha ha...

So Asian :p I have a 7 thousand dollar tax refund coming in :kekekegay: I'm ok spending a bit on food.

All good advice though... I have no doubt you're right about the Museum of Natural History :( really makes me wish I had a bit more time.

the 9/11 memorial - you'll need to get tickets in advance (its free though)

    joe's shanghai is yummy! =P
    xian foods is yummy tooooo

statue of liberty - i doubt you'll be able to get tickets to go up (they sell out like 3/4 months in advance?)
but you might as well give it a visit

and yes - any of the museums you'd be hard pressed to go through it in a quick time
sometimes i guess u wish there were more hours in a day? =P

Most of the suggestions are good, if you want to go to SoHo, it's only going to take around 2-3hrs if you actually want to go into some shops. And than you can walk to Chinatown and go to the restaurants you want to eat at, use "Yelp." Shanghai Café or Joe Shanghai are more of the well known places for their xiao long bao. I think you should go to flushing and explore around and try a few Korean restaurants but you don't have time.

If you are going to the 9/11 memorial (close to Chinatown as well), you should also take a walk across the Brooklyn bridge, best time would be around sunset (Great view). All these places are pretty close to each other. I walked around these areas back and forth before.

I actually think 34th street (Herald Square, it's where the Empire State Building is around) has more things to do than 42th street (Time Square).

Ellis Island Immigration Museum and Museum of Natural History are good too and it's right across from central park.

oh if u do the brooklyn bridge walk - get off in dumbo and go eat at grimaldi's =D
one of the best pizza places

u can always just rent a bike (or go on a horse carriage) around central park
    =P

if u can fit, try one of the observation decks?
or just go to some roof top bars instead! hehehe
230 fifth is reasonable! they give u red robes to wear!! haha

Definitely walk the Brooklyn Bridge, bro. It's free!
I would take the subway into brooklyn maybe have something to eat and then walk the bridge into Manhatten. It's a much nicer walk than the opposite direction.

Statue of Liberty could be classed as a must-see but if you're seriously short on time probably better off spent elsewhere.
