Hey guys...I'm going to be taking a vacation to NY in a few weeks and I was wondering, has anyone here already been there or is currently living there? Since this is my first time going there, I need some tips on places to shop/visit...a few restaurants and directions would be nice! Thanks in advance :)

I used to live in the nyc.

There are a lot of things to do there. If you're into shopping, even though the tax is horrendous (8.65%!), there are plenty of places to shop! There's midtown 5th ave, which is where most of the designer stores are (like gucci, LV, feragamo, cartier, tiffany, etc.). right around there is 57th street, which has even more designer stores, like burberry, dior, & fendi. They also have the nba store on 5th avenue & nike town, on 57th street. There are the department stores, like neiman marcus, bergdorf goodman (on 57th street), & saks fifth avenue. Other than 5th avenue & the 57th street area, you can also go downtown to the soho/village area. They have a lot of trendy stores there. Then there's the flatiron district, which also has the stores like banana republic, j.crew, club monaco, sephora, which can also be found in the soho/village area. I like the flatiron district more because it's not as crowded as the village/soho.

Then right by the village/soho is chinatown. It has tons of restaurants there, but they tend to close pretty early...& they have some interesting shops. There's this place called elizabeth center in chinatown that has tons of stores in the basement that sells the sanrio stuff, video games, comics, etc. There's this one really good vietnamese restaurant some where around there, but I'm going to have to doubly check with my sister for the name of it...I'll post it here once I find out. :)

Further by the water is the financial district (wall street). Around there is south street seaport, which is great for sight seeing...you can take some boat ride that takes you around manhattan. There are also lots of stores for more shopping @ south street seaport. Then, there's the world trade center site, which I'm not sure if you'd like to see it, but by the world trade center site, there is battery park city & the world financial center...you can see new jersey from the water.

nyc has 4 chinatowns, 1 in manhattan, 2 in queens (elmhurst & flushing), & 1 in brooklyn (8th ave). You can find some stores to rent tvb series & stuff like that.

For more sight seeing stuff, there's central park back in the midtown area, rockefellar center & radio city, which are right around each other, times square (the theater district), n toys r us (with the ferris wheel in it). In the 34th street area is more shopping..They have macy's herald square & this place called manhattan mall. I personally don't like going to that area to shop, but you could check it out if you happen to pass by.

Wherever you go in manhattan, there will be tons of bars. The ones to the lower east side offer drinks that are pretty cheap.

Then there are all the museums (museum of natural history, museum of modern art (MOMA), the guggenheim (which renegade_cash mentioned above), the cloisters (for more artsy stuff), & also the planetarium. This is all in manhattan. If you want the exact address I can ask my sister to provide the information for you, as she's currently living there. Just leave me a PM.

There's a lot more about nyc that makes it great to visit...but it's definetly not the greatest place to live IMO.

So is it like 14% now, i haven't bought anything in a while.

I live in NYC.. The quiet part though -.- Not really quiet, but yeah. Where are you headed? Manhattan? I don't really go there so I'm not really sure but you better watch out 'cause theres a Chinatown there and it's very filthy and crowded. But the food and shopping places are cool ;)

15% tax in Canada?! O.O It's like 8.65 or something here in New York City. I've been to other places like Boston and Maine, I think it's a bit cheaper there. =.=

Why are some states tax free? -_-" And why do tax rates vary? -____-;; New York City sucks. The tax rate is really too high

I've been to New York in the summer to visit my aunt, I live in Maine. Not really good with the shops and things they have there but it's alright I guess. A little too loud, the streets are really crowded even in the night. :(
