Any dystopia sci-fi books would do nicely: Catch 22, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, 1984...

Or, depending on the theme of your year (most school relate their English class with a theme), you can read classics like Jane Austen.

I particularly love The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne... The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory was a good read but there's a film (expect it to be bad) coming out soon, so it may not be a good choice for assignments.

    An extract from wiki
"In turn, Nineteen Eighty-Four has been seen as revolutionary and politically dangerous and thus been banned by libraries in many countries.[1] Along with Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, and Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, it is among the most famous dystopias in literature.[2] TIME Magazine selected it as one of the 100-best English-language novels, from 1923 to the present.[3]"

    Empress ORchid by Anchee Min

brief summary: To rescue her family from poverty and avoid marrying her slope-shouldered cousin, seventeen-year-old Orchid competes to be one of the Emperor’s wives. When she is chosen as a lower-ranking concubine she enters the erotically charged and ritualised Forbidden City. But beneath its immaculate façade lie whispers of murders and ghosts, and the thousands of concubines will stoop to any lengths to bear the Emperor’s son.

Orchid trains herself in the art of pleasuring a man, bribes her way into the royal bed, and seduces the monarch, drawing the attention of dangerous foes. Little does she know that China will collapse around her, and that she will be its last Empress.

If you liked Fahrenheit 451, Clockwork Orange may be a good choice. Or We by Zamyatin Yeugeny. Or Animal Farm by George Orwell (this one may be too similar to our current society to quality though). Or The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Or Lord of the Flies by William Golding (think Kid Nation -tongue2)

If you are a fan of anything sci-fi like, read Isaac Asimov. Love his work.

I was going to recommend Life of Pi, but then I read your requirements :\. If you have time you should read it. Its worth the time. At least I think it is.

How about A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens? A take on the brutal French revolution. But I don't see why you can't do anything set in the present.

Somehow A Tale of Two Cities reminds me of Portrait of Dorian Gray, no idea why. Which in fact, is a good read too. So hedonistic and superficial.
