It’s a fresh new year for Joe Ma (馬德鐘), who will be dedicating most of his time this year managing his food businesses in the city that never sleeps. Last year, the business-savvy actor and his two older siblings invested a seven-figure sum in a Japanese restaurant, which is dedicated to their late father. Thanks to the success of their restaurant, and Joe’s own growing interest in the food industry, he and his wife, Karen Cheung (張筱蘭) will be adding more of their footsteps around the block. This month, Hong Kong reporters spotted Joe and his wife visiting a property in Whampoa, overlooking its renovation. Joe and Karen will be opening a new oyster and red wine shop there, investing nearly $1 million HKD on the project. It was a busy day for the couple—Joe and Karen each carried two phones, and spent all day discussing with the workers about their restaurant project. “I am still a rookie,” said Joe, in regards to the opening his new restaurant. “I’m learning as I go.” Joe has a passion for creative and healthy eating, which prompted his decision to open a western restaurant this time around. “The oysters would be cooked differently. I also plan on opening up a bar next door. I’ve decided on this area because of the people flow. We’re going to target the OL demographic, as they tend to go for quick but healthy meals. My wife has studied food related to health and longevity, so she’s given me a lot of tips.” The 48-year-old added, “Success does not come without effort. Do it all yourself and with heart. That is my motto.” Asking if his two shops would cost him over a million dollars, Joe said, “Let’s not talk about money! This is just something we’re trying. Doing business requires experience and heavy involvement. It doesn’t just exist on paper.” Joe also stressed the importance of trust when it comes to doing business, saying, “As a boss you should be able to manage everything from the inside out, from the kitchen to the management and marketing. Do not micromanagement. Trust the person in the position.” Creds: Oncc
