There is something endearing about Joey Meng’s (萬綺雯) success. Debuting as an ATV actress in the early 1990s, Joey never received as much media exposure as TVB artists or the TV Queen award, but managed to become a household name in Hong Kong. It is Joey’s simple and sweet personality which made viewers and colleagues love her equally. Joey believes that everyone can build the “good” life and surround themselves with people who care about them, as long as they treat others the way they want to be treated. Hong Kong’s Sweetheart Joey said, “I don’t care about looks, career, or status. I just want to be a good, kind-hearted person.” When she is not promoting her dramas, Joey lives a simple and low-profile life. She would stay at home to spend time with her family, friends, and pet cats. She would learn how to manage her garden, paint, build, and occasionally meet up with her neighbors to chat. “My neighbors are very kind to me. Whenever they hold parties, they will also include me. When they know I’m gone and they suddenly see lights at my house turned on they would message me about it, asking if someone is home. If they haven’t seen me in a long time, they would ask if I’m going through a hard time at work. They’re all very sweet.” Joey is Hong Kong’s sweetheart. Her fans, colleagues, family, and friends all dote on her and treat her well. She has made many new friends since joining TVB in 2012, such as Johnson Lee (李思捷) and Roger Kwok (郭晉安). TVB management also appreciates Joey’s work and cast her as a lead actress in various TVB dramas. She married scriptwriter Chan Sap Sam (陳十三) in 2000 after only dating for seven days and the couple are still married and as close as ever. Asked if Joey felt as if she is living the “good” life, she said seriously, “I believe that I am capable of changing my own fate. Once you change, the people around you will also change, and slowly people will learn how to help you, care for you, and your life will become the good life. Therefore, it really depends on how you are as a person and how you control it. It is not destined. Of course, there are many who are lucky, such as those who are born into a good family.” Husband Heals Joey’s Soul The good life is a misconception. Joey expressed that she encountered many obstacles throughout her career, although she does not talk about them since there are many people who are less fortunate. Since marry Chan Sap Sam, Joey has found her emotional support. “My husband is my ‘chicken soup for the soul’. I tell him everything. He gives me positive energy, teaches me the many principles of life. When I’m feeling down, he will cheer him up. He can really turn my mood the other way around in a second. He’s great!” Sap Sam also helped Joey analyze situations and see them with more dimension. He continued to encourage Joey when she encountered some problems at work and felt depressed over her cat’s death recently. “He saw how sad I was, and he told me, ‘Honey, just go back to being simple. Don’t think so much. Being simple suits you best.’” Creds: ihktv
