Every episode is full of twists and interesting plots that made me want to watch till the end (who were the scriptwriter(s)?) Supernatural phenomena were also used to hint to Justice Bao whenever injustice took place. As the story progressed, Justice Bao also discovered the existence of ghosts and demons. In later episodes, he even solved a case for a ghost (case 39 - The Execution of the Royal Tutor.) Kenny Ho was great as the quiet and dignified Zhan Zhao and most - if not all the main lead actresses were very talented. They could really cry so convincingly and acted so well. I would have loved to have known more about them - too bad I cannot read Chinese thus do not know the cast. Actors who played villains seemed fixed for the role in all episodes, hence that took out the element of surprise, as the viewers could guess who the culprit would be eventually. Nevertheless, they portrayed their characters excellently. The emperor from these early episodes was understanding and fair, different from the typical weak and silly emperors in the stories of Yang Warriors and later Justice Bao series. He trusted Bao completely and gave a lot of power to Bao. There were two actors for this role and they both portrayed a more competent emperor for once. For the first time, I did not feel that I wanted to spank this Song emperor (his intelligence must have deteriorated when the series was remade.) On sets, a lot of fake scenes were used just like those on the stage of a Chinese opera, but the rich costumes more than made up for it. I liked Zhan Zhao's blue robe that was simple yet fitted his tall stature. On a side note, I noticed that any man who wore a certain purple garb would end up as the villain. The theme song had an exciting tune and was very impressive. The sub-song was also pretty good and sounded romantic - its title was even used as the theme for one of the cases. The fighting sequences were nothing spectacular. Some were better than others. This might be the only thing that is inferior to the later versions.
