I just arrived in South Korea, and my colleague says that I can die if I sleep in a closed room with a fan on. He insists that "fan death" is an actual danger. What the hell? "I'm told that every Korean believes that fan death is real," Jeffery Hodges, a professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, tells AF. "I've heard as explanation that the belief originated at a time when Koreans were first able to purchase electric fans and used them to such an extent that electrical systems were burdened, so the government spread a rumor that running them overnight was potentially fatal." Hodges also shared the following passage from the government-issued Cultural Guide for Migrant Workers in Korea: "In some cases, a fan turned on too long can cause death from oxygen deficiency, hypothermia, or fire from overheating." "Some Koreans," he adds, "give outlandish explanations about how the whirling blades of a fan can sever oxygen molecules." So far as AF is able to determine, no scientific literature exists to support the existence of fan death, nor does it seem to be a perceived threat in any other country but Korea. File it — like the faith of the French in the healing power of Rochebaron cheese smeared on the testicles — under "Urban Myths, Foreign Dolts."
ive heard something about how when a fan is pointed directly to ur face when ur sleeping can cause death and im chinese dono if thats true or not
eeeee ive not heard about this before wor....whut about all them people in hk...??.... they have fans and a/c blowing their faces all the time....-what?
@mui and frostshards: have you ever tried breathing when you're on a boat, with winds hitting your face at fast speeds? or stand in a blizzard without a scarf or hood? try breathing in those cases. you wont be able to, because it would be very hard.
really makes no difference, i run my fan on all night most nights during the summer. I would say its probably not healthy to have it pointed right into your face cuz you're gonna end up with a dry eyes and throat and possibly a cold if it really gets too chilly, but i cant think of any way this would kill you lol. The only way a fan might cause death is if the wiring was stripped and it shorted and lighted your carpet on fire or something... but honestly, thats a worry with all electrical appliances.
I dunno .. all I heard from my mom is that if you blow the fan at your face too long, you'll get sick. that's it. I don't use a fan anyway but an AC. Now, any myth about the AC too?? lol
My mum and grandma believes in this stuff as well....they're always liek, you're gonna kill yourself!!! But still....it wouldn't be bad to die in your sleep No Pain! It should put my flames out LOL No need to tell us that you smear cheese over your testicles everynight...........
I don't think it will put out the flames, flaming, more like.. it will BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN God Forbid..
Isnt that the same thing for leaving a hair dryer plugged in or something, even when its not on ¬_¬ lol but my mum never did let me sleep with the fan on....now i jus down own one.... it sucks haha but i listen to my mum, and wont sleep with one on no more... x
