My laptop has a bright white screen when turned on. It works when I connect it to an external monitor. I have already tried reseating the flex cable on both ends. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

The function key to switch it to the local monitor perhaps?
    Latest drivers installed?
Turning on and off the laptop?
    Laptop Model Number?

yeah most likely to have it set to display on external monitor only

play aroudn with the settings as knoc said, usually fn f5/f7?

alternatively, have it plugged into the monitor, and change the settings there =)

Tried that, that was how I got it working on an external monitor.

Yes, it worked, it jus turned all white one day.

    Yes, tried that. Multiple times.

    HP Pavilion ze4400, I know it's old.

I have played with the settings, I'm sure it's a hardware problem and not a software problem. You don't even see it booting when it turns on. It's just bright white, which means that the lcd backlight is still working.

It might be, but I wanted to see what else it might be, maybe a part I can replace. I'm not convinced that the lcd is broken.

Probably the flex cables are damaged (microscopic lesions?).

I will probably try to replace the flex cable. The laptop was not dropped.
