The third results ceremony for Hong Kong’s music industry, TVB’s Jade Solid Gold Award Ceremony, took place last night at Star’s Hall. The results of the night coincided with the ceremony’s theme - ‘changing to a new era’ (改朝換代) , with Leo Ku and Miriam Yeung ‘s surprise win over Eason Chan and Joey Yung, to take home the Most Popular Male and Female Singers respectively.

The popularity level of Leo Ku’s songs this year were average , so it came as a shock for all when he was presented with this award for the first time. Likewise Miriam Yeung, who last won the award 6 years ago in 2002 and had since failed to steal the award from Joey Yung’s iron grasp, was so overcome with emotion that she broke down in tears on stage.

When realizing that she had no chance in winning the Most Popular Female Singer Award, after it was announced that she was the recipient of Asia’s Most Popular Female Singer Award, Joey Yung looked both disappointed and shocked. As for Eason Chan, who consequently lost the chance of being named the Most Popular Male Singer, after winning the Asia’s Most Popular Male Singer Award; he was expressionless and refused to look straight at Leo Ku as he performed.

At last night’s award ceremony, both Leo Ku and Miriam Yeung broke down in tears during their acceptance speeches for the Most Popular Male and Female Awards.

During his speech, for the first time in public, Leo Ku thanked his ‘always behind him supporting him’ rumoured girlfriend and assistant, Lorraine. To his girlfriend of over 15 years, Leo Ku expressed, “I thank TVB, I started my career from TVB’s acting classes. If there was no TVB, there wouldn’t be me. I thank Gold Label, Paco, Lin Xi, my fans and I must especially thank a person. Years ago, when I had just entered the industry and won the newcomer award , I forgot to thank her on stage. When I returned backstage, she told me to thank her when I win the most popular male singer award. After that, the days passed one by one, I experienced having no record company, disappearing from the industry and not knowing whether I would have a chance to return to the stage and accept an award. Today, it has finally come true. I think she is very emotional backstage right now, thank you, my assistant, Lorraine.”

Meanwhile Miriam, who had not won the Most Popular Female Award for 5 consecutive years, was so overcome with emotion, that she was unable to speak for several minutes as she cried. Miriam said, “Since winning the award last time, for the past 5 years, I have felt down, I have felt like a failure. My outlooks on things were sometimes irregular. But I understand I must learn from my failures, I must turn my patience into a positive energy and to appreciate the people around me. I thank those who have given me positive energy on my journey – my friends and colleagues who were more nervous than me, my company who fought alongside me and felt the disappointment. (At this time, television crew members told her to wind her speech up.) Don’t tell me to wind up, I don’t know how long I will have to wait! Thank you Eason Chan, Li Xi and my friends who helped me stand up to the pressure. Thank you Mr. Lam, Mr. Lai, my fans and my parent, who have sat in this crowd every year to accompany me.”

Joey Yung and Kay Tse both won 3 awards last night. So far, sitting at the top is Kay Tse, who’s song ‘囍帖街’ is the year’s hit, has won 14 awards at the end of the year music award shows. Meanwhile, Joey Yung and Eason Chan are both tied in second place with 11 awards.

When hearing that she had won the Asia’s Most Popular Female Award, seemingly disappointed, Joey slouched down into her a chair. The shocked singer then said, “I never thought I would win this award. I feel ashamed because up till now, I am yet to release a Mandarin album that I am satisfied with. In the future, I will do my best to work in the Mainland Chinese market, to make Hong Kong proud. I will become the most famous Hong Kong singer in Mainland China.”

A mishap occurred during the Gold Outstanding Performance Award, leaving Jade Kwan red faced. When Eric Tsang announced Susanna Kwan as the recipient of the award, Jade, whose last name is also Kwan, mistakenly went up to accept the award. This caused Susanna to appear confused and ask, “Is it me?” Eric Tsang laughed and exclaimed, “She is in a hurry to congratulate you!” Embarrassed and not knowing what to do, Jade walked back to her seat with one hand covering her mouth. Seeing this, Eric continued to make fun by saying, “Jade has won all Gold, Silver and Bronze Outstanding Performance Awards. I think she also wants a Lifetime Outstanding Performance Award!” Thankfully, Jade won the next award that was handed out, her song ‘龐貝‧21世紀’ was named one of the Top 10 Gold Songs. Surprised, Jade began to cry, causing all the singers to get up from their seats and applaud her. Jade said, “I am easily embarrassed. This is my first Gold Song award. I thought I would only win an Outstanding Performance Award tonight, I never thought that I would win a Gold Song award. I will continue to work hard."
