Liza Wang (汪明荃) has spent 40 years working in the Hong Kong entertainment industry and in recognition of her contribution to the performing arts, Hong Kong's City University presented her with an honourary doctorate today.

Many famous faces from the entertainment world attended the congregation, where she was presented with her title by the university's vice chancellor Mr Norman Leung (梁乃鵬). They included her partner Law Kar Ying (羅家英) and close friends Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), Isabella Kau (寇鴻萍), Maria Chung (鍾慧冰), TVB executives Virginia Lok (樂易玲), Stephen Chan (陳志雲), Ho Lai Chuen (何麗全) and Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍), Lee Heung Kam (李香琴), Yu Mo Lin (余慕蓮), Leung Hon Wai (梁漢威) and her god-daughter Jennifer Tse (謝婷婷).

Receiving her honour on the stage, Liza became very emotional as her achievements were announced and afterwards, she said that this was the first time that she had attended a graduation ceremony like this and stepping onto the university campus brought her back to her schooldays. She said that when she wore the doctor's gown, she felt quite overwhelmed. Asked if receiving this honour felt better than winning an award, she admitted that as this was an educational achievement, then it did carry more weight.

Asked what else she would like to do in the future, Liza said that she hopes to continue with her work on screen for her series and also on stage with her Cantonese Opera performances. She also plans to take part in more community work.

Kar Ying was asked what he will be buying Liza to congratulate her and he said that he has bought her a heart shaped pendant worth a five-figure sum and she was wearing it to the event. He had made a special journey to attend the ceremony from the mainland where he has been filming and had to rush off afterwards to continue his work there.

Ok .. I am shocked her partner is Law Kar Ying. I thought she has someone at least better looking ...lol

As for the award, I am speechless. Whilst Liza Wang has worked in the entertainment industry for years, it's not sufficient to qualify for the honorary doctorate. Frankly, she hasn't done enough of what I would considered as "community" services. Serving as host for charity events or whatever don't count as doing community work, after all, she gets paid doing stuffs like that. She hasn't created any big changes in the entertainment industry too. In fact, the industry has gotten so bad; flooded with new untalented people whilst my veterans are leaving and being kicked out left and right. Basically, I don't think she deserves it.

Then again, award in Asian country appears to be worthless or at least only recognized in that part of the continent cuz the value of it is not based on work done but connections. In fact, I think it happened in the "America" too but at least, it's a lot ess and people here have rights to object and protest.
