Can somebody please tell me which internet browsers and version has least memory please or which do you think and why.

I started off using FireFox [can't remember which version] but I kept having 'not responding' msg all the time. So I switch to Google Chrome [latest version] so far so good. But I don't like the idea that every tabs I open it opens a new process.

I usually have about 6-7 tabs open, streaming videos too.

    Thank you.

The reason Chrome creates multiple processes is so that it can distribute the load on all your processor cores. This increases performance greatly when multiple tabs are open. It' also helps when a plugin or tab crashes, which won't cause the whole browser to crash. Multi-process browsing is going to be common place, so I'd say you don't have much other choices out there :p

    I see.

So which browser and version do you think that has less RAM you think?

I already have Safari as I forgot to untick when I downloaded itunes... what do you think about that browser?

    Also what about Opera?

I'm not asking which one is good btw.. I just want to know which has less memory. I'm on Windows 7 if that makes any difference :/

  4. This is a tough question to answer... Application nowadays require a lot of memory to run. If you want a low memory application, unless it has been coded by monkeys, it typically mean less functionality. Furthermore, say you have a browser with 100 pages open, each of those 100 pages are "cached", or stored in memory, which means more memory used. Same thing with videos. If each of your 6-7 pages have videos loading, that means they download the video into your cache, for you to view them. This takes a lot of memory, depending on the length of the video.

Sorry, but the earlier the browser, the less the memory used, the less functionality it is. I.e. no Javascript, no flash.

The only feasible option is to either use a bad browser, or upgrade your RAM.

i think opera is good on low spec computers, but Firefox should be good too.

  6. This reminds me... I was testing a web application with heavy graphics and Javascript, and regardless of any browser I use, the total memory usage hits 500MB-ish.

This proves the point that it doesn't matter what browser you view.. It's the content you view.

Okay - I usually have 2 tabs with video's on it, the rest of the tab is just text and images. My RAM is 3GB. I just want to maybe.. switch different browser as I don't like the new process when open new tab with Chrome.

I guess I'll stick to Chrome then.

    Thanks for your answers.

  8. Perhaps instead of searching for a new browser, try finding out what applications you are running on your computer that hogs memory. 3GB is ample memory for browsing.

3gb of ram for windows 7?

  10. Yes, Windows 7 32-bit. Windows 7 requires a lot less resource than its predecessor, Vista.

is she running on 32 bit? lol

  12. Would makes sense.. She didn't build her computer, so it's safe to say that it has to be Windows 7 OEM, and manufacturers aren't retarded enough to put a 64-bit OS for a computer with just 3GB RAM

still 1 more gb wouldn't hurt lol

  14. Additional 1GB x number of customers who bought the laptop = $$$ that they could have saved.

Also, who knew, maybe it's a laptop that you can't upgrade the RAM.

lol if its 3 gb its most likely 2 slots...

    I have windows 7 / 64bit OS / 3GB RAM

I was only asking because sometimes the web pages don't load properly.. and I thought it's the browser that I'm using, but it's okay now.
As I cleared cache/cookies/history.. as I haven't done that since I've switched to Chrome.

    lol 3gb for 64 bit

  18. Okay nvm then. What's your computer make? Laptop/desktop? Any reformats?

it is a laptop - sony vaio and I haven't done any formatting on this laptop.

Why? I don't see the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit....
    and what's wrong with a 3GB on a 64-bit OS? :S lol.

  20. Of course you see the difference. If you didn't see a difference, we wouldn't be having this topic lol.

And what's wrong with a 64-bit OS on 3GB is that typically 64-bit OSs have higher performance, however at the same time, it uses more memory than its 32-bit counterpart. Normally, you would only install a 64-bit OS on a system that has 4GB or more.

I take back what I said. There is indeed a manufacturer out there dumb enough to put a 64-bit OS on a 3GB system.
