A STUNNING meteor dazzled stargazers as it hurtled towards the Earth in a blaze of green light.

The astronomical phenomena lit up the night sky in South Africa, but has left experts scratching their heads as to where it might have landed.
This amazing video shows the moment the meteor streaked over a busy road.

When it first appears it is a brilliant green colour, but it then transforms into what looks like an orange ball of flame. One witness, who saw the spectacle near Johannesburg, said: "We saw this big green ball of fire. It kind of came out of the sky, out of the blue. "There was a sudden flash, like an orange stripe in the sky, followed by a very bright explosion where the sky lit up as if it was daytime."

Astronomers and scientists are now trying to find out where the meteor hit.
Claire Flanagan, of the Johannesburg Planetarium, said meteorites often hit the ground all over the world, but they are rarely spotted by people. She added: "Everyday we have rocks hitting us but the thing is they mostly happen over the ocean or where nobody is living or at two in the morning or at midday when nobody can see them, so people were lucky to actually see one."

  2. This is beautiful, within seconds the sky goes from daylight to sunset to night again.

but that aside.. war of the worlds much?
