Following Fala Chen’s (陳法拉) recent decision to not renew her management contract with TVB, other artists whose contracts are expiring this year, including Moses Chan (陳豪) and Michael Tse (謝天華), may also not renew their TVB contracts.

Since his breakthrough role as Laughing Gor in E.U. <學警狙擊>, Michael has enjoyed a rapid rise in fame. Because of his appeal to the Hong Kong public, TVB began to cast him as the male lead in several dramas, including the E.U. spin-off series, Lives of Omission <潛行狙擊>. Michael’s dramas garnered good response, with the recently-aired Sergeant Tabloid <女警愛作戰> earning 32 points in ratings.

Although Michael has found success in TVB, he may not renew his management contract with TVB when it expires this year. However, due to his good relations with TVB, he will continue working with TVB under separate arrangements.

Kenneth Ma and Tavia Yeung Hope to Film in China

In other related news, it is confirmed that Kenneth Ma (馬國明) will not leave TVB as he does not want to leave his familiar and comfortable life in Hong Kong. He would rather earn less and will be content if he can film a mainland China drama each year. Filming for The Hippocratic Crush 2 <On Call 36小時II> yesterday, Kenneth did not have the chance to celebrate Mother’s Day with his mother. However, the filial son said he has frequently buys presents for his mother throughout the year. When asked if his mother has been asking for a daughter-in-law, Kenneth said, “She didn’t say! But she did complain to me about the rising costs of groceries, so I have given her more money.”

Co-star Tavia expressed she would like to have the opportunity to head over to China to earn more money. However, her busy filming schedule in TVB does not allow that to happen. Tavia asked TVB to lessen her workload so that she has the chance to film more mainland dramas.

Kinda expected these things to happen with many HK actors, they want to having better opportunities else where. TVB made a new of them but they want more money and TVB doesn't can't offer those prices. Mainland is where most of them are going or want to go.

I am not a fan of Michael Tse but even if I am, don't matter if he leaves TVB.

From a business perspective, I find TVB's conservative handling of its artists as fine. From an artist perspective though, TVB is obviously underpaying them.

Most artists who become popular expect/demand high salary; but seriously, how much is enough? One can't expect to get paid at market price because in the showbiz, an artist's value change constantly. You can be #1 artist of this month and the next moment, a scandal can drag on and your value drop to zero .. imagine if TVB entered a contract for the market price and you failed to live up, then it will be a huge lost since the company gotta execute the terms of the contract. I don't think any artist would accept any stipulations that go against their future earning.

Personally, I think TVB has to rid some of the lead actors/resses and bring in some new blood with actual talent rather than a pretty face. It also has to focus on producing more quality script instead of re-writing old ones as new. Most importantly, the top execs gotta get axed .. the past decade is more than enough evidence of their failing to recognized the demise of the company from their poor management and corruptions.
