Michael Tse’s ‘ku wak chai’ role becomes a big hit, netizens mourn his death Earlier the sentencing of TVB artist Michael Tse’s drink driving case aroused public interest, but lately because of his oustanding performance in E.U. as Laughing Gor, his popularity is bursting and worshipped by tens of thousands of netizens! He is not only regarded as a best candidate for ‘09 Best Actor, netizens even created a facebook group and has successfully attracted more than 110,000 members to join. In episode 22, the scene of Laughing Gor dying in the line of duty has triggered intense response, some people initiated a topic to gather ‘Do not let Laughing Gor die’ signatures, some suggested TVB to film ‘Prequel of Laughing Gor’, all major forums seemed to turn into Laughing Gor forums. Our reporter called E.U. executive producer Mr Wong (黃偉聲), he expressed that he never expected the character of Laughing Gor to have such overwhelming response, he highly praised Michael’s outstanding performance and originally the character would die even earlier. He is also considering filming a fourth installment, so that the mystery of whether Laughing Gor is really dead can be unveiled to the many netizens. After Laughing Gor suffered a gunshot and died, all E.U. forums paid silent tribute, netizens even photoshopped a picture of the deceased Laughing Gor to hold a memorial service, many netizens paid their respects by burning incense, hoping he can be buried at Gallant Garden (浩園, cemetery for civil servants who died on duty). Many netizens expressed that “days without Laughing Gor, they will no longer watch”. Some netizens were so into the series that they cannot accept the sad news that Laughing Gor has passed away, relying on ‘died but no corpse’, they started a saliva war on whether it was a fake death. Other netizens have started more positive action, they are collecting signatures for a petition to TVB scriptwriters to let Laughing Gor be reborn. Also some netizens are denouncing culprits who caused Laughing Gor’s death, these include Yeuk Sum who deceived his love, Pak Kiu who fired the shot, behind the scenes manipulator Sai Hau, and even indirect culprit Yeuk Bo. Exclusive response from producer: totally unexpected I have heard many voices and have seen the huge reaction from netizens. Originally I only planned this to be a cop series, I never expected a ‘ku wak chai’ (古惑仔, triad member) role to resound so much! Maybe the audience felt pleasantly surprised by this character. Since the media already exposed beforehand that Laughing Gor is actually an undercover cop and that he would die, this caused the viewers to anticipate more. Some netizens feel he is not dead, this is not surprising since his corpse has not been found, also we cut a previously filmed scene which showed his burial and body thrown to the sea. We want to give the viewers some suspense, to have people speculating whether he is really dead or not, and to give everyone some hope. We will not film ‘Prequel of Laughing Gor’, but the chance of filming the fourth installment is a lot greater, because there is this suspense, maybe Laughing is not dead, maybe someone rescued him, even hidden him, the more ideas everyone has, the more possibility this story will continue. so originally this was going to be: Laughing died. For real. Proof is his burial and thrown to sea body. Good thing they cut it out... Gives the sword a much sharper edge... at least thus far.
Perhaps a spin-off with the story of Laughing Gor? Could work, since it worked with Infernal Affairs ...
Was disappointed when Laughing died. His character is well portrayed by Michael. Really hoping he will end with a Ah Sum as they deserve to have a good ending after all the bad and sad things that have happened to them.
