BERGENFIELD, N.J. — A New Jersey mother who mistakenly thought she was losing custody of her children allegedly stabbed her young son, then tried to kill herself. Elida Marroquin was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, child endangerment and weapons offenses following Saturday's incident at the family's home in Bergenfield. She was being held Sunday on $500,000 bail. Authorities say the 37-year-old married mother of three, who does not read English well, mistakenly feared her children would be removed after receiving several letters from their school in recent weeks. Marroquin, armed with a steak knife, allegedly stabbed her 8-year-old son in the stomach before cutting her own neck and abdomen. Both remained hospitalized Sunday but are expected to recover from their wounds.
