BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman in Brevard County was arrested for allegedly trying to sell her toddler son to a tow truck driver for $10 in gas money. The tow truck driver said no and followed the woman until deputies could catch up. The woman was accused of offering to sell her child for $10 at an intersection several miles down US-1, but she was followed and stopped by police. Officers questioned the woman and her friend before deciding to arrest her on child neglect charges. Even as she was being cuffed and put in the back of a patrol car Marcy Pappalardo denied trying to sell her son for gas money. "Call 'em and tell him I'm going to jail," Pappalardo said. "He's a liar." A tow truck driver said she pulled up next to him at a red light and made a proposition he couldn't believe. "She asked me if I wanted to give her some gas money for the kid in the back, that's exactly what she said." The tow truck driver said after he turned down the offer he immediately called 911 and then followed the car several miles north on US-1 and even after the car turned around until sheriff's deputies caught up. She said he was lying. "I have a thousand dollar TV flat screen. If I needed the money I'd brought it to the pawn shop," Pappalardo said. Because the alleged incident happened in Melbourne, Melbourne police took over. Officers spent more than one hour talking to everyone involved. The passenger in the car with Pappalardo admitted she was just released from jail Thursday after being arrested on drug charges. She said they did ask him for money, but that was it. "I've know this lady for a very long time that little boy is her pride and joy," the passenger said. The driver said he had nothing to gain from this and ended up losing time at work. "I have kids of my own. I have no means to make something like this up," the driver said. Officers said the child neglect charges stem from the accusation that she tried to sell her child. But they said there were other aspects of this incident they wanted to look into. Source
