Motherboard Issue

Discussion in 'Science, Technology & Car Chat' started by Dan, Jun 7, 2010.

  1. FML......... i turned my pc on, everything is fine, until it unexpectedly shuts off....... i turn it back on, i get a long beep short beep..... which means a motherboard error...........

    FUCK MY LIFE..................................... T_____________T

  2. im completely lost... every time i boot, it gives me different beeps every time........

the first time, it gives me a long beep short beep........... indicating a mobo error
then afterwards i get an 11 short beeps..... meaning cache mem error.........
then i get one short beep, DRAM refresh error, but nothing happens afterwards........
then, for a few times, i turn on, no beeps, but doesn't even hit bios............
then i get a long beep 2 short beeps.... video card error..........

gah which one is it................. T____________T

edit: latest beep is the long beep 2 short beeps... i don't want to go out to buy a new graphics card if it's not the problem... it's giving me so many error beeps, im not sure which one is the correct one............

edit2: then again, when it did boot up before, the screen just went blank, despite the machine still running........... it could definitely be a video card error....... imma try to boot it and see if i can remote into it

  3. take everything out and put it back in if you havnt

    Separated to keep things clean.
Include, Motherboard Model, Bios Updates Applied, Length of Ownership, Windows Updates settings, Any previous quirks that stood out.

is pretty much u need to pinpoint down to what is wrong, from just booting the motherboard with nothing in it and gradually adding parts back in and test

btw do u have a surge protector on the computer stuff u have? i noticed many don't have this thing installed

  6. well that's just balls, computer hate you in general :(

but yeah, take stuff out and put stuff back in one at a time, hopefully it isn't your motherboard, but chances are..... i have a hunch it maybe it, which is causing the system to think it's everything else that is wrong.

  7. Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI LGA 1366 spec sheet: http://www.evga.com/products/pdf/132-BL-E758.pdf
Bios Updates: default Bios version.. I'm going to have to dig around to figure out the exact version
Length of ownership: It was built prior to Kontra's PC Builder's thread, so more or less July-August 2009
Windows updates settings: Automatic update I believe...
Quirks: Ever since I installed the Zalman ZM-MFC3 4 Fan Speed Controller, it's been booting rather oddly... Sometimes it takes 5 full seconds before it actually boots in Bios.. I think this will be the first component I remove, to test.

Specs: (copied from post PA - Entertainment Destination - View Single Post - The PC Builders Thread)

yea all my electronics are connected to surge protectors

Yea, once I get some time (most likely on friday or saturday) I will test the components one by one...

Thanks for advices, and will keep you all posted on the progress

My crystal ball tells me that it's your motherboard, otherwise I would expect you to get the same beep code every time. Resetting the BIOS makes any change ? Anyway, like everybody says ... the best thing is to start from the bottom up.

Btw, is it my idea or you have a lot of PC issues ? I might be confused with hongkongboy actually.

  9. no this is my first major issue. I will rebuild it to find the problem.

I don't think the lengthy boot time is a quirk. I think it's doing some diagnostics. Mine does the same thing.

    I'm using the same motherboard.

  11. *hi5 for the same mobos

could be dust or take off the mobo battery and ram, does it not show the error code on the mobo?

  12. the controller does diagnostics? i mean, it had a quicker boot time prior to installing the controller............ so it wouldn't make sense if this controller causes a longer boot time....

    Oops. Misread. My bad.

  14. an update on the problem:

i removed every non-essential component, rotated the ram, de-dusted everything, and battery is not dead.

after clearing cmos, i rebooted my machine, however my motherboard displays award code "FF", which means boot, and remains like that indefinitely.

i removed the graphics card, cleared cmos and rebooted, all the award code checks out, gets to "75" which means HDD detect, and then gives a long beep 2 short beeps. Naturally, the graphics card is missing, so i assume it is normal to raise that exact beep?

i'm going to wait until tomorrow and test using a friend's graphics card...

    edit:

    news:

i disconnected everything, leaving only the mobo, 3 sticks of ram, and the graphics card. I pressed all the cables and connections, notably the cpu power connector

    boots into BIOS (YAY)

reconnected HDD, boots into windows (YAY)

going to reconnect the dvd drives to see how it goes

thanks all, for advice. I will keep you updated to see if it continues to work.

edit 2: okay, i got every component back in, and in working order... it looks like it might be a power connection issue, a loose plug somewhere...

if it was a connection issue, what should have been the symptoms? i've been getting sporadic symptoms, which didn't point to a connection issue.........

  15. ugh. same shit happens.

i think it is because the video card did not initialize.

however i am unsure what this means, and what i should do about it... any advice?

If it still does that, try using the video card in a different PCI-e slot for the video card. If it still happens, it might be a faulty motherboard, not detecting the components sometime.

My old motherboard was similar, won't boot up due to motherboard not detecting the components. My didn't even show the BIOS unless it successfully detects everything..

only the primary PCI-E will work if the board has 1 or more slots, so can't try in another PCI-E...

It worked on mine for some odd reason... but now.. I tossed the mobo away so can't do another test.. lol.

I swapped the PCI-e video card around to make it boot up for my semi-dead mobo..
