New Year’s celebration events are the best time for artists to make fast and easy money. Hong Kong’s music legends, Jacky Cheung (張學友), Andy Lau (劉德華), Leon Lai (黎明), Aaron Kwok (郭富城), and Eason Chan (陳奕迅) were paid big bucks to perform at New Year’s Eve concerts held in mainland China and Taiwan on December 31. While Aaron spent his New Year’s Eve in front of over 850,000 fans in Taipei, Jacky, Leon, and Eason chose to welcome the 2013 New Year in mainland China. Jacky was invited to perform for Jiangsu Television’s New Year’s Eve concert, the most star-studded concert event in the country that night. Jacky was that night’s last performer before the great countdown. He performed several songs, including “Silent Wind Waves” <定風波>, the theme song to the film The Last Tycoon <大上海>. Jacky also performed China’s 2012 Olympics theme song, “China Beats Shake the World” <中國節拍震動世界> with a group of Chinese Olympic gold medalists, including swimming prodigy, Sun Yang (孙杨). After Jacky’s performance, a star-struck Jay Chou (周杰倫) came on stage to greet Jacky. The hosts exclaimed, “Our two Heavenly Kings are now on stage together! If Jiangsu TV is to continue their New Year’s Eve celebrations next year, and if [JSTV] wants to surpass the accomplishments made this year, what shall we do next year? Who else can we invite?” Many Taiwanese artists were also invited to perform in the New Year’s Eve concerts in China. Leehom Wang (王力宏) performed at four different events, including those held in Suzhou, Nanjing, Jiangsu, and Shanghai, earning 3.3 million RMB in total. Jolin Tsai (蔡依林) performed at only one concert in Hunan. She pocketed 2.9 million RMB from her 7-minute long performance.
