Not an 2K player but virtual currency buys you in-game item and upgrades to your online player or your 'fantasy team'
From what i remember from my friends telling me in 2k13, each game you play you get some virtual currency. I can explain the virtual currency in NHL 13 better but it's similar, they have a mode called Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT for short). Different from NBA that the virtual currency (or 'pucks') are only earned and used in this mode. You can spend real money to buy card packs (players for your team) or use the pucks. Except in 2k13 (recalling from what my friends told me), you earn the V.C. after every game you play doesn't matter what mode, and you can spend it on your 'fantasy team' or upgrade your 'My Player' stats.
