CHIBA, JAPAN-- Nintendo will offer a game controller with its upcoming Revolution games console that is drastically different from those used in previous consoles, the company has disclosed. The controller looks a little like a television remote control and will allow people to play games with just one hand, said Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo during a keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show, which opened on Friday near Tokyo. The unit mixes buttons and motion sensors so games can be controlled through a combination of pressing buttons and also waving the controller around in the air. To Hold and Wave Simulations of the new controller being used in a number of different games were shown in a video at the keynote. It was swung in a baseball game as someone would swing a bat, stabbed into space to kill imaginary bugs as someone might use a fly swatter, and waved from side to side to control a tennis game on screen. Nintendo will also offer an add-on unit connected via a short cable to the main unit. That was simulated being used in a first-person shooter game, of the type that's very popular in the U.S. A gamer would hold the main controller in the hand and point it, holding the secondary controller in the other hand for use as the gun's trigger. The new style controller is part of Nintendo's drive to expand the gaming population. Iwata said he hopes it will be less intimidating for non-gamers to pick up. "In order to realize the goal of creating a new starting line that anyone can instinctively understand we have come up with a design that differs greatly from any of today's controllers," Iwata said. "We have also made bold innovations in play style as well." "At the heart of this controller is a brand-new sensor which we call the direct pointing device," he said. "This allows Revolution to detect precisely the location on the screen that the controller is pointing. With this technology, you can not only point at a location intuitively but it can also detect the distance from the screen and even the angle of the controller." Other Recent Introductions Nintendo has already made innovations in the portable gaming space with its Nintendo DS console, which features two LCD one of which is touch-sensitive. The Nintendo DS, which was launched at the end of last year, has been selling well, Iwata said. Sales in Japan to the end of August, about nine months after its launch, were 3 million units, he said. In particular the device has succeeded in getting new people into gaming or attracting people back to the pastime, he said. Iwata's speech came three days after the company launched its latest portable gaming device, the GameBoy Micro. The device went on sale in Japan on Tuesday and has been selling well, he said. "The Famicon version, which looks like a Famicon controller, appears to be most popular," he said referring to Nintendo's first TV game console. "It's already out of stock in some shops but we are ready to make additional shipments next week." The GameBoy Micro is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. on September 19 priced at $100
it seems like the controller screws over fighting games and stuff, even with that adaptation to make it like a normal controller
Remember how completely lame the first nintendo controllers were? I cannot imagine something so uncomfortable yet somehow I was able to play hours of mario brothers with it
i think this will be very very cool and unique, like the nintendo 64 controllers, they came out with the analog stick and i was confused if that device was a genuis or crap. The rev controller looks very promising.
The gamecontroller is a "revolution" in gaming. It's a very weird controller but you'll have another way of playing games. Look at Nintendo DS, First "gameboy" with touchscreen ability.
I saw a demo video on gamespot, looks pretty cool, but I can't imagine it working for all types of games
