    Again with my brother's laptop.

I have noticed that every-time it does the windows update thingy and updates for you then laptop restarts, 10mins on laptop either if not doing anything or on net browsing... I always get the 'not responding' and having to switch off laptop (without shutting down properly) and do a system restore which is before the windows update and it seems to work fine.

So I dunno which update is causing it to 'not responding' all the time? And do I really need to update it?

    Can anyone please help? Thanks!

Some update might take longer especially if it's .NET, can take hours sometime to finish updating. At least that's what I've experienced.

Uninstall your browser, install CCleaner, clean registry, install Chrome or Mozilla.

    Or maybe not enough ram?
Go to the built in search bar on the bottom left side of your computer screen, type in msconfig, click the Startup tab, and uncheck anything that is non essential, and reboot the computer.

huh? I'm not experiencing hours of updating?? lol. Updating takes like 5-10 minutes. It's fine.

I first thought it was the browser, but apparently not. I used Chrome first then FireFox but both 'not responding'.
I'm not sure which to uncheck?

But I swear it's something to do with the windows update!
Cos when I don't install and update or even restart the laptop when finished updating, the laptop is working fine. And I'm not experiencing "not responding".

So basically after idling a bit then try using the computer it will end up not responding? At first I thought it meant that update is taking forever and then all the sudden it goes into not responding.

Go to start -> type in msconfig in search -> Startup tab and see what programs are checked for start up and that can be a cause for not responding issue, but then it's hard to tell or say what might be wrong if the computer only freezes after installing the new batch of updates.

Update one thing at a time.
After each update, wait awhile till you update again so you can find out which of the update is causing the error, and then you can probably google the rest.

Sorry! :p I guess my explanation was confusing.
wow! I just checked.. and really it's all; toshiba shit... no idea what half of them are!

But I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with the startup programs... like I said it's only when I do the windows update thing then it will give me a 'not responding'.
As I have not yet updated it, laptop is working fine.

I read that on Google.. but that's my very last thing I would do before trying to resolve this.

    What exactly does this do??

EDIT: ahh it just automatic updated and downloaded the updates and now telling me to restart laptop to finish installing important updates!
Once restarted, I will def get a not responding. And having to do the system restore once again.....

TCPView is a Windows program that will show you detailed listings of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the local and remote addresses and state of TCP connections.*

Why don't you just STOP updating? The updates are optional, just stop downloading and installing them. There haven't been any major windows exploit that I'm aware of that needs a update. If it honestly bothers you, I would just go for a re install of windows. With the time you've spent trying to fix this bizarre problem you could have re-installed multiple times if I'm honest.

    1. Download malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and scan your laptop and remove anything that it finds. you will have to reboot your laptop after removing the malware problem.

    2. Do a virus scan with a ant-virus software if you have one, recommend AVG, Avast or kaspersky.

    3. Use CCleaner to clean out your registry.

    4. Go to my computer and rightclick on your c drive, properties > tools and do a error check. it will scan your drive and fix file errors. once done, defrag your hard drive. always defrag your computer at lease once a month, it will help improve the performance of your computer.

    5. Do not just randomly update everything you see on the important update list or optional updates. only update the ones from Microsoft and windows 7 security updates. everything else is not necessary to be updated. Also You don't have to do a windows update all the time when there available, its your choice if you want to update them, there not necessary. The only important updates you want are the ones that automatically install themselves whenever you reboot or shutdown your computer.

Can we take a step back ? What exactly do you mean with "not responding" ? Your computer hangs completely or one of the applications hangs ???

And there has been a few critical updates lately, see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ and https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisoryarchive. So yes, I would recommend you to install the updates unless they already compromised your Windows Update :)

Edit: Like they already mentioned. At least start installing 1 update at a time to find out if the issue is related to 1 or more updates, or to Windows Update in general.

lol, so you are saying yes update while everyone is saying it's optional.. haha. Well I only update the 'important update'.

What I mean by 'not responding' is that when I'm on the internet at the top it will say 'not responding'.. so I can't really click or do anything. When I'm not on the internet, it will just freeze and I cannot move mouse or do anything... sometimes the mouse will move but when I click on anything... it won't open.. like when i click shut down.. nothing happens.

I'm going to install those important update one by one and see which one is making the laptop not responding.

EDIT: Each update installed I would restart, so far I done these:
The one that's cancelled. I did again and is working.

    No problem so far.

Well yeah, I was referring to the important updates. They are important for a reason :)

If you ever get one of these "not responding" events, then try to go to the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) to see if you can kill whatever is "not responding". While you are there, go to the Processes tab and see if anything is eating up all your CPU.

Yeah, I tried to do the task manager.. but like I said.. it won't allow me to do anything. So I had to power off the laptop rather than actually clicking shutting down.
Yep I always update the important ones not the optional..
Funny enough, I downloaded and installed one by one today and it all works fine and not getting the not responding anymore.
So dunno what the problem is having to install all those important updates. :/

Maybe some of the updates conflicted with each other ??? Oh well, as long as it's solved permanently. You may want to run with the Task Manager open in the background for a while. At least you can monitor the CPU usage in the systray.

whenever i buy a laptop, i clean install from scratch, avoiding all the bloatware from these manufacturers
most likely not windows update but also websites you visited and it installed something that has conflict somewhere
when you do system restore, it restores the last good config and removes current software installs too
