DOTING Colin Dickinson was distraught last night after accidentally running over and killing his 84-year-old wife Doreen. Mr Dickinson - who turns 86 today - was reversing along the drive at the couple's home as they prepared for an afternoon out. Their automatic Mercedes E270 pinned frail Doreen against a wall which then crashed on to next door's drive. A neighbour called 999 but paramedics were unable to save Mrs Dickinson, married for more than 50 years. She was pronounced dead in hospital. Mr Dickinson, a former NHS chief, was too upset to comment at their detached white-painted home in Grenoside, Sheffield. The couple's son Peter said: "It is a terrible tragedy." Police said: "We are investigating the incident, but we are treating this as an accident. "Most people think collisions only happen on busy main roads, but this is not the first time we have been called out to an incident like this. These events are tragic for all involved." Yesterday accident investigators were still examining the car and the scene. One theory is that Mr Dickinson may have pressed the accelerator instead of the brake as he reversed. A neighbour said: "They seemed like a really devoted couple. They went to live at the coast for a time before returning to Sheffield about ten years or so ago. "Mrs Dickinson was quite frail and I believe she had suffered health problems for some time." Another added: "I have lived here for ten years, but I got the impression they didn't go out much.
Sad indeed, which is why I think any above the age of 70 should not use a car, or re tested at least every 2-3 years. I have seen more dangerous driving by old drivers then any other groups, even boy racers
my grandfather used to drive on the wrong side of the road when he hit a certain age. luckily he stopped driving before he hurt someone.
