On the morning of November 22, Paul Wong (黄贯中) published a statement on his Weibo, denouncing his father with implications of domestic violence. The 300-word statement started off saying, “Father, please forgive me. Drinking and women are not the bigger problems; I can endure them, but you hit mother, used a large kitchen knife and hit her. The three of us brothers were only eight to ten years old then.” Paul’s statement turned more emotional and threatening, writing, “Father, do you know? I respect and hate you. If you weren’t an elder, I would have already hit you. If you dare to make my family suffer again, I will kill you with my own hands. Half of the genes inside me are from you; I call them my garbage genes. If you want to hit my mother, my wife, I’m afraid I will become my own father’s murderer.” Paul’s post attracted over 25,000 comments and 32,000 reblogs. Paul’s statement scarred netizens, and many of them urged Paul to seek legal help. One netizen wrote, “Use the law to protect your family. Don’t be rash! If he does do anything to hurt [your wife Athena Chu (朱茵)], I will not let him go!” Another wrote, “Don’t do anything stupid! You still have your wife and daughter! Leave him!” One netizen advised, “I understand this pain of yours, but the only thing you can do is to leave him with your mother, wife, and child. If you do kill him, you would have to pay the price. You would regret it.” After Paul released his strong statement, reporters rushed to Paul and Athena’s residence in Kowloon City, but the couple could not be reached. The press contacted Athena’s good friend Ada Choi (蔡少芬), who responded via her manager that she was not aware of this news, but even if something did happen to Athena’s family, Ada would not make any statements. According to lawyer Vitus Leung (梁永鏗), Paul is at risk of facing legal trouble for the threats he made to his father on his Weibo. Paul’s statements have damaged his father’s reputation and it can be a serious criminal offense. The Hong Kong police have also become involved, and the force stated that they are currently looking into the matter. Paul’s Explosive Records In April 2012, Paul was accused of throwing glass bottles at the paparazzi. Paul denied it and vowed, “If I did it, I’ll get [expletive] run over by a car.” Around the same time, Athena, who was pregnant and unmarried at the time, was blasted as a hypocrite for having premarital sex. Athena, a devout Christian, had stated that she was against premarital sex in the past. When Paul was confronted with these statements, Paul angrily said, “Which [media firm] are you from? Tell your boss to ask me!” In July 2012, a report claimed that Paul was unhappy that his Hong Kong Coliseum concert only had 70 percent of the seats filled. As soon as the report was published, Paul took to his Weibo to slam the report, writing, “[expletive] you. Don’t let me see you!” In May 2013, a reporter whom Paul did not get along with uploaded a photo with Paul’s Beyond band mate, Steve Wong (黃家強).
