let's say that I want to start learning mandarin and be able to speak the language somewhat fluently after 2-3 years, only by studying at home without any tutor.... is it possible? If I put much time on it with all my williness, practicing every day reading, writing, speaking for myself, watching movies/series, will it do? I know a little bit already but I guess it will be more difficult if I speak to an person than looking on a book and speak after that, that's the problem but do u guys think I can override that by time? - Don't forget only home studying!!

nothing is impossible but i would say no

cause if you dont have someone who already speaks mando, how will you get the tones/sounds/pinyin right? theres only so much you can do by looking at text books, and it wont be enough to get you fluent in my opinion

you need someone who will have conversations with you in mandarin and someone to correct you on your mistakes, get a tutor or go school

not if you want to learn properly, cause listening and reading can only do so much

you need someone to listen to you pronounce your words, you may think you pronounce your words well when really it isnt. thats why you need a 3rd party to teach you.

also a tutor will be able to structure your learning properly, so you learn at the right rates and they know how to teach also.

I think it's possible because honestly, mandarin is not as hard as Cantonese, for example, as there aren't as many tones (4+1). As well, mandarin is more of a "written" and "not as expressive" language compared to Cantonese.

However, if you've never had any bit of experience with Mando, I would say your biggest struggle would be pronouncing things correctly. Some of the sounds in Mando are quite tricky to pronounce as you really do need to articulate, whereas in Canto, you can be a lazy speaker.
