Cross <心戰>, a criminal psychological film starring Simon Yam (任達華) and Nick Cheung (張家輝), recently unveiled its first promotional poster and trailer. Scheduled to open in theaters on October 3, Cross tells of a series of stories that occurs due to a homicide case in Hong Kong, as well as the ensuing psychological aftermath.

After a chain of murders sweeps across Hong Kong, an investigation discovers that the deceased all left messages of suicide on a suicide-related website. The police quickly lock in on Huang Meibao (Nick Cheung), the website founder and administrator, but he flatly denies any involvement. Around this time, Li Liang (Simon Yam) arrives at the police station to turn himself in, bringing with him the instruments used to commit the crimes and other documentary evidence. However, Li Liang believes that he was rescuing the people who died. If that is the case, who is the real murderer?

The promotional poster expertly paints the extreme contrasts between the egotistical Huang Meibao and the antisocial Li Liang – one is bathed in light, while the other is cast in shadow. Next to them read the words, “One idea to become a Buddha, one idea to become a devil,” suggesting that everyone is capable of possessing an “inner demon.” The poster’s background also shows various crime tools, such as knives and hypodermic syringes, parading as the steeples of modern city skyscrapers. Combined with the text, this image again hints that the psychological issues in the film plague not only the suspects, but the entire city.

According to Simon, the characters in Cross are all presented as if they were in an abnormal state, but his hope is that the movie will also draw attention to the pressure many people experience in modern society, especially due to Internet addiction. By talking about the characters’ inner demons, the film also aims to address ways to prevail against them.
