Well, I was looking up for mods for the ATI 2600xt 512mb...
I found a soft mod that was for 2600xt to FireGL V5600...
But i was wondering is it safe? i don't want to mess up my vid card..

  2. My guide to ATI GPU's

when you buy your ATI GPU install the software that comes with it (whatever version of catalyst that is)
DO NOT UPGRADE CATALYST OR ELSE YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!!!! Computability issues will abound.
DO NOT MOD IT!! maybe 1% of people may get away with it though.

My advice is to leave it alone.

ye agreed u shouldn't go modding anything if ur unsure about it. it could cause a lot of hassle and time. if u want a 512mb graphics card then just get it. if its to expensive best thing to do is to wait for the price to drop a bit before buying it.

  4. ya my 1950pro is 512mb and it loves team fortress 2 :)

If you're going to mod your graphics card whether is hardware modification or software, you must keep an eye on the temperature of your card. Look to see if there's a temperature monitor application for your card run a few benchmark tests to see the temperature fluctuation idle and under load. Often times, tweaking your graphics card (overclocking) will cause temperature to rise.

errr... just to be sure of what ur suggesting ur doing... ur trying to turn ur 2600xt into a FireGL V5600?

if so... plz don't... if memory serves me right... the FireGL's are for art design/architectual/modeling purposes... so unless the video card was intended for the purpose of such... don't try to turn it into a FireGL card...

of course i could be wrong... so if someone's in the know of the ATi's plz do correct me...

in any case, there are some decent 3rd party drivers out there... just make sure u read follow ups in their forums about potential problems...

and my general rule of thumb for trying to OC ur card if u intend to do that is, if ur gonna do it... u might as well go all out and OC it to the maximum that ur card can handle b4 it crashes on u... ur going to lose life on ur card regardless of how hard u push it... so why not get the most of the 1-2 years ur gonna have the card? by then a new and better card would be out anyways ;)

damn this could be dangerous lol.

id say leave it alone. AOES is right anyway, FireGL cards are used primarily for architectural programs and rendering in 3D video programs.

-lol Sorry about that. I'm not very familiar with the ATI market. If you're still interested in modding your card, however, I believe that you can flash your card to make it believe it is a 2800 or something of that nature. Again, like Aoes has pointed out, it's not 100% safe.

in fact i suggest upgrading drivers, cause there are always improvements, for performance, bugs, etc

but then again if it aint broke dont fix it

generally if you dont know enough about the process, dont even attempt it

i'd say only do it if your sure of what you are doing and you know what you are going to do. If you don't know what you are doing..don't try because it will get ugly and it can affect the way thigns will work in your system
