It was a chilly day in Hong Kong, but that didn’t stop fans from turning up at the TVB studios for a double celebration on Saturday night.

Not only was the station’s TVB8 channel celebrating its 10th anniversary, it was also hosting the TVB8 Mandarin MOD Best 10 Awards 2008 — broadcast live not only in Hong Kong, but throughout the region. In Singapore, TVB8 (StarHub Channel 53) aired the show.

Not too surprisingly, despite a large field of nominees chosen and voted for by the viewing public, the big winners turned out to be veterans Eason Chan, Joey Yung and Karen Mok, who picked up the big awards for the night — Most Popular Male Singer, Most Popular Female Singer and Most Popular Female Singer in Mainland China, respectively.

“I’m definitely happy,” said Mok of her win. You don’t get such an award overnight! It must mean that I’ve worked hard for a while! So, it’s very encouraging.”

This year has also been a great year, award-wise, for Gary Cao. Sporting lilac floppy bangs this time, he took home four awards: Song of the Year, Best Singer-Songwriter (Gold), Best Music Arrangement, and was also a winner for Top 10 Gold Songs.

And despite missing out on the Most Popular Male Singer to Chan, the Malaysia-born star was still in good spirits. “I don’t mind,” he quipped. “I’m still quite new to this business compared to people like Eason. I’m very happy.”

The show, which was hosted by Paisley Hu and Benji Chiang, featured performances by all the winners of the Top 10 Gold Songs award, which included Mok, Chan, Cao, Yung, Guan Liang, Khalil Fong, Charlene Choi, and Lin Fong and Vincy Chan.
