TVB’s first action-crime drama of 2014, Ruse of Engagement <叛逃>, is slated to air next Monday on March 17, 2014. Starring Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Ron Ng (吳卓羲), Aimee Chan (陳茵媺), Yoyo Mung (蒙嘉慧) and produced by Amy Wong (王心慰), Ruse of Engagement was first introduced in 2010 as a prospective TVB drama for the following year, and though production for the drama finished as early as September 2011, it took TVB two years to air the drama.

Producer Amy Wong described Ruse of Engagement as “a romantic and intense love story”. Amy, who featured the theme of brotherhood in her last production Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>, chose to tackle a different kind of love story for Ruse of Engagement. “As we were researching about terrorist cases from foreign countries, we decided to use a secretive anti-terrorist unit as the backdrop [for the love story]. We also want the audience to admire the charismatic performances of our leads, Ruco and Ron. Everyone will also be captivated by Aimee’s performance here. Ruse of Engagement is another representative work for her.”

Ruse of Engagement chronicles the stories of two brothers who work for Hong Kong’s fictional Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) of the Hong Kong Police Department. Elder brother Chong Yau Ching (Ruco Chan) and his younger brother, SDU officer Chong Yau Kit (Ron Ng), were not very close growing up, but after collaborating in a case involving an international terrorist group, the brothers find their chemistry and common ground. ATF leader Shum Chi Ngo (Eddie Kwan 關禮傑) recruits the two brothers to his team. The two brothers go through ten weeks of vigorous training, and upon graduation, the wise and laid-back Ching is assigned to the intelligence unit, while the observant and passionate Kit joins the operations unit.

Ching and Chung Yat Ka (Aimee Chan), a data analyst for ATF’s intelligence unit, is a bickering pair, but the two eventually fall in love. Kit has a crush on Ka, but out of respect for his brother, he tries to put his feeling aside. In a specific missing firearms case, Ching meets journalist Yip Ting (Yoyo Mung), who helps Ching solve the case after she passes him crucial anonymous information. The two develop an ambiguous relationship, but soon after their encounter Ching goes missing. After days searching for her boyfriend, Ka comes across a video of Ching getting killed by a gunshot in the head. Ching’s death devastated Ka. In order to help Ka recover from her emotional loss, Kit imitates Ching in the best way he can, falling deeply in love with her in the process.

The fictional ATF team in the series is based on the real-life anti-terrorist unit, the Counter Terrorism Response Unit (CTRU) of the Hong Kong Police Force. Established in 2009, the CTRU aims to protect, prevent, and investigate terror threats in Hong Kong. CTRU is Asia’s first police anti-terror patrol unit.
