You dont get over time, so for many people you end up working extra hours into the evening and/or on the weekends. Often these jobs also expect you to check email when you are home and you can also be expected to answer the call. Now with the economy killing off thousands and thousands of jobs, more people are working more hours because of both a) they are afriad they are next, so better start proving their worth b) their coworkers are now gone so they have to start picking up the extra work. For the past two weeks I have stayed at work 1 to 3 hours more at least 6 times now.
i'm an hourly employee n hoping to get promoted to salary soon. i wouldn't mind working the extra hrs cause that will help out with the long run. i'm used to workin more than 8hr days already. i'm used to the 10hr+
^ i got full day mon & and fri and 8-11 on tues but thats like nothing and sometimes i skip .. so basically i can do full time in hospitality jobs not the mon-fri 9-5 ones
*Sigh* so hard to find a job now...FT student who has only 2 days of uni in my next sem...I want a job ><"
thas a pretty good timetable ya got..!!... should you not be chilling with your friends then..? or studying...??..-lol
eh.. tough to get a job nowadays.. you should be glad you have work job market is pretty closed off.. I guess that means more school for me... plah
sorry for not replying earlier i've been crammed at work i worked all through my weekend I'm a software engineer
I got a 3% raise...:( At least I still have a job.... but no, I can't motivate myself to work more hours. I'm out by 5pm.....
I have a salary job so after my one hour lunch I work 8.5 hours a day and once a month I put in 3 hours on the weekend. The nice thing is you don't have to worry about the time clock about coming in late or taking exactly an hour for lunch. Also, it you have appointments or stuff you can just leave and come back to work.. a lot of the time I don't make up the hours
That doesn't make sence in my mind, cause Salary never requires you to pay OT cause that's part of the salary mentality. Um I work for <insert large company name here>, they use to be famous for the amount of mandatory OT their workers put in. But because that became just a negative thing and they lost a lot of workers, they turned around and made huge changes so that this was no longer the case. But due to the econ situation. People leaving, contractors are not getting their contracts renewed etc. People have to start filling in the spots so they are working more, and no one refuses because they are scared they are next.
The problems with salaried positions are legion. If you have a great company, when you have to stay late or work extra hours for a time sensitive project, they give you back all your time in other ways (compensation time, an extra day or two off to make up for those hours, or a big fat bonus at the end of the year). Really bad companies that grind their employees will pay you a flat rate and then try to work you every moment they can. They believe that you're already paid for, so you have to serve them every which way they demand. At the end of the year you get a bonus that most people would consider an insult. If you work for the latter, then consider moving on (especially if you're young and not entrenched), or looking for an hourly rated position within the same field. Often, you make about the same, but you'll work a lot less hours. And if you have to put in more time, they pay you for it. :box:
I get a salary and sometimes work 14 hours a day but then again, I can stay home all week or work at home when I feel like it. However, I expect all my staffs to work at the office. They can get time off when they work long hours and stuffs like that; just not a flexible schedule. The reason for that is some work require internet access and I don't want things to get delayed cuz someone is working at home and come to work later with unfinished product due to slow or lost internet connection at home. I have heard complaints about electric bills ... WTF .. working at home is an option; not a must. That's why I kicked all whiner off my team and department.
Ok i guess you hit the mark. My company does give good bonuses (minus this year become of the economy) so I guess that is considered for my compensation for OT.
