Have anyone here ever used skype to make foreign calls? I am trying to find cheap solutions for long distance calls (to Hong Kong) and skype seems to be one of the solutions I seek. Please share your experience with this fine tool to help me decide.
yepp my parents always use skype to call my aunt and others in HK.... its very cheap ~ and the quality is good too
I signed up the Unlimited World http://skype.com/allfeatures/subscriptions/uscanadaworld/ only to find out it's only unlimited to landline anywhere in the world. I know, I'm blind; since it's written right there on the description. So, beware ...
I am using VoipCheap** at the moment. I'm not using it for HK, but instead to make free* (GRATIS) local calls. HK is also a free* destination (including mobile). Unlike Skype, it does not have webcam support though. I use a VoIP adapter to make calls using my phone, so I don't miss the webcam part. I also got a fixed phone number for free where people can call me on through normal phone (not sure they provide this anymore). * 300 minutes free a week. After that limit it's 1 cent/minute for HK. ** VoipCheap is part of the Betamax group. They have spawned a million other similar sites that basically do the same thing. So you can go through the list and try to find other cheap destinations you might want to call.
cheap but not free, use poketalk.com, place your phone number of you and receiver's there, it will connect by calling your number, u pickup and it will start making the call to the other party; free is only available for 10 minutes and you are able to make 30 calls each month; i don't know about the price of skype but i use a calling card called FoneBuster from ThePhoneCardStore.com, a $20 card allows me to call 909 minutes to HK, and the good thing about this card is that if you got into a VM of the person's number, u have 10 secs to hang up or leave you msg and you WON'T get charged;
I too am using Skype and have subscribed to Unlimited world for about 10 months now. I generally call to family in HK and thats to Landlines AND mobiles too...if you check the skype website, it lists many other countries where you can also call on mobiles as well as landlines so its just a case of where you want to call...plus its mega cheap with a fair usage of 10,000 minutes and yes...there are many other providers out there but skype gives you an advantage of using an "online number"...this is where you get to choose a number in a country of your choice and people in that country can call you at their own national rates...for me, I've got a HK number so people can call you on there landline (free in hk) or mobile (uses their monthly allowance) ... been using it for nearly a year now and would definitely recommend it!
