As people are probably aware, modern day pirates plying their trade off the coast of Somalia has been targeting international shipping for years. In a recent botched hijack attempt, pirates took the captain (who is US national) of one vessel hostage, and had been holding him several days while the USN negotiated for his release. Ultimately, the pirates were suspected of being about to harm him, so US navy personnel killed the pirates and rescued the hostage:

In a rush? For a quick synopsis, just read the red highlighted lines.
    -pirate :rl: ;)

IMHO, they've been going about this the wrong way. The international community needs to establish the rule of law, even on the open seas. The UN can create a no ply zone, where every fishing boat can and is subjected to search. Those found with weapons instead of fishnets would be taken into custody. The world needs to be pro-active instead of reactionary after the fact. Despite the good outcome in this event, like the story pointed out; there are other hostages and the eventual future or next event. Coastal piracy isn't new. Even the US Marine's Hymn pays homage to their historic significance (in its opening line, "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli"), making reference to the fact that the marines were once used to fight the Barbary pirates (US Barbary Wars).

Instead of waiting for them to come out to conduct their illegal and violent acts, the international community needs to go in and clean house. The Somali coast sadly has been without any real or effective state apparatus, and has been literally overrun by criminal anarchy. It is a de facto warlord state. The world needs to go in and reestablish order, and the whole of Somalia needs to be made into a UN protectorate for at least the next generation.

***Sidebar - In a curious coincidence, the USS Bainbridge is named after Commodore William Bainbridge who, in his day, had also fought against pirates plying the African coast.

LOL... not quite Behind Enemy Lines, but hey, the economy is in the tank, and everyone's out of work. A simplistic us versus them where Americans can feel good at the end is just what the box office would love. Never mind that this entire episode may herald a chapter two where US merchantmen are being fed to sharks... :ugh:
