Sing a song into your PC, and Microsoft will help you make music.

That's the premise behind Songsmith, song-writing software that Microsoft is releasing this week at the Consumer Electronics Show here.
Songsmith -- which goes on sale Thursday at Microsoftstore.com for $29.95 -- joins together the two loves of several employees at Microsoft Research: music and computer science.

During an interview in his Redmond office earlier this week, Microsoft researcher (and '80s cover band guitarist) Dan Morris explained.

"When a musician hears a melody, it's almost like the chords are there," he said. "You hear chords when you hear the melody."

For "song writer-types," Morris said, "this is something we take for granted."
So, Morris decided that perhaps the relationship could be captured algorithmically.

That's exactly what Songsmith, which Morris developed with fellow researcher Sumit Basu and intern Ian Simon, does.

Here's how it works.
Start up Songsmith, pick a style and a tempo, click record and sing a melody to the beat.

Songsmith tracks the pitch of your voice. (It's OK if you're out of tune, as long as "you're reasonably close," Morris said.)

An algorithm, trained by analyzing the chords in a database of 300 songs, takes the pitches and figures out what chords match.

Songsmith then plays back the melody, along with the accompaniment it creates.

Then users can get creative.

Move a slider to one side and the accompaniment is "sad." Move it the other way and it's "happy." Another slider can adjust the "jazziness" of the accompaniment.

"No matter where I put the slider, it's something musically reasonable," Morris said. "Underneath, the chords are changing."

Morris and the other researchers considered other sliders -- such as "pop" versus "country" -- but determined that structurally the two options were too similar.

Songsmith is designed both for someone who has never written a song (thus, the "happy, sad" nomenclature) and for professionals.

Nonpros can sing a song in Songsmith and save it there. They can then take the creations and e-mail them to friends or export them to Movie Maker to accompany a movie.

Professionals, meanwhile, can take their own melody, as well as the accompaniment Songsmith generates, and manipulate them using their own studio tools. Nonvoice inputs work, too.

Morris showed off a recording of an accompaniment Songsmith generated for a tune he played on his guitar.

It worked.

The voice, Morris said, is actually "the most complicated instrument."
