Stars arriving back to Hong Kong from Beijing all wearing masks Joey Yung Charlene Choi Yumiko Cheng Fiona Sit and Khalil Fong The first case of H1N1 in Hong Kong has now been confirmed. The 25-year-old man flew to Hong Kong via Shanghai on Thursday, and was admitted to hospital. The virus was confirmed in North-East Asia on Friday, when authorities in Hong Kong received the results of tests from a man who recently arrived from Mexico. The government has ordered a week-long quarantine of the hotel he was staying in, as well as its 300 guests and staff. Local TV footage showed police wearing masks guarding the hotel exits. One guest at the hotel, Juliet Keys, said the quarantine decision had caused astonishment. We were all a bit stunned really. You just don’t believe that someone can tell you that you can’t leave your hotel for seven days.” The guests have been given medical checks and are being treated with antiviral drug Tamiflu. “Everyone’s in masks and being very cautious, ” Ms Keys told the BBC’s Newshour programme. “We’ve been told to wash our hands every time we go outside the room because there could be germs on the lift door for example. The infected man arrived in the territory from the city of Shanghai. China’s health ministry said it had asked local authorities to put all those who travelled on the same flights as him - both from Mexico and within China - into medical quarantine. On Friday Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu said the virus was very likely to enter mainland China and urged the country to prepare for an outbreak.* A group of artists included Joey Yung, Charlen Choi, Fiona Sit, Yumiko Cheng and Khalil Fong arrived back to Hong Kong from Beijing, having finished Jackie Chan’s “Bird’s Nest in Beijing” concert yesterday. They were all very worried that they had put on their masks during the flight journey. Khalil was the only one seen without a mask. Joey told reporters “We are fortunate that this time the H1N1 was identified early so that precautions can be made to prevent the spreading of the infection. I am very careful now, I make sure I wear mask and wash my hands frequently. My mom has got a lot of masks at home, I wonder if they were left from 2003. Joey has no plan to work abroad and therefore is not worried about flying around. * BBC news on “China moves to curb virus spread” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8030306.stm Source: BBC News/Oriental Daily

HK is dense populated, so germs are more easily spread. They are just cautious, since sickness = no money
