Steven Ma Interviewed by Bella Magazine Reporter (Andrew Chong): I recalled you said during lat year's awards ceremony that you have always thought that you are not fated to awards and that you won't place your hopes too high to avoid disappointment. However, awards are appreciation to your career and mark the rise of an artiste's popularity; didn't you ever wish for them? Steven: Yes. I dreamt of them when I was young… Andrew: Young? But Steven, you are not old! Steven: Oh, of course I'm not old. I'm just experienced. Andrew: As compared to your acting career, your singing career wasn't that successful. Have you ever felt that it's a pity? Steven: I've nothing to complain about. One has to learn not to complain if you want to get a job in the entertainment industry. Since you made your own decision, you have to persevere. You won't be able to move on if you keep complaining. I'm not a saint. Initially, I too have many complaints, I felt unhappy and that I was treated unfairly. Especially when I worked very hard and the opportunities were given to others. However, later on I realized that complaining can only lead to one's jealously. Once you are jealous, you become pessimistic and this is very unhealthy. Steven continues: I was deeply influenced by James J.S Wong. I hosted my first program with him. He always gave me suggestions to improve and encouraged me a lot, treating me like his half-son. I loved listening to his analysis. I learnt a lot from them. Apart from these, my own personal experiences and my character also gradually led me to take things coolly. Andrew: What have you learnt from James Wong? Steven: Actually he didn't teach me specifically. He loved to talk about his experiences while sipping wine. I got a lot of inspirations from what he said. Steven continues: I'm quite an objective person. Even if it is my friend who made a mistake, I will not cover up for him just because of our friendly relationship. Especially in today's entertainment industry, you can et a better glimpse of the truth when you look at things from an objective viewpoint. Andrew (jokingly): You are really one of a kind in this entertainment industry, love being the ‘third party’. You have been in this industry for more than a decade and yet you seldom have rumors. Even if there were, you wouldn’t bother with them right? Steven (nods): These rumors are really ridiculous. I've said what I wanted to say, so there's no point repeating them again. I can only smile and take things coolly whenever I hear these news. Andrew: Steven is such a frank and friendly person. Originally the interview was scheduled for half an hour. However we ended up chatting for more than an hour. We would have continued for the night if his assistant hadn't signaled us to stop. Source: Bella Magazine June 2007 (Singapore)
