Yet another reason to have iPhone together with a MobileMe account

There are plenty of software solutions out there to help potential victims of Macintosh laptop theft recover their hardware in case their machine is stolen. Most of them record things like screenshots, IP addresses, and photos of the perpetrator, then send them to an email account or some sort of server run by the software company. While the software isn't fool-proof, it can provide a small bit of added security to your beloved notebook.
Unfortunately, iPhones don't currently have a similar software solution. And, if Apple continues to treat iPhone development the way it does, there will likely never be one. Of course, this is unfortunate, as iPhones are small and prone to sprouting legs and walking away. One TUAW reader's iPhone did exactly this, except it didn't sprout legs and walk away exactly, so much as it was taken from him at the dry cleaner by some sort of inconsiderate iPhone thief.
Although Rob was disappointed, he apparently has a c'est la vie attitude. Assuming the iPhone was gone for good, he went ahead and bought a brand new iPhone as a replacement. He activated his new phone and set up his various accounts, including MobileMe syncing. That's when he started to notice contacts of people he didn't know showing up on his phone. Rob quickly surmised that the contacts were those of the individual who stole his phone; the thief not only didn't wipe the phone clean, he didn't turn off MobileMe syncing. And worst most hilariously of all, said thief added his friends' and family's contacts to the phone.
Before long, Rob had enough information to send the police to recover his stolen phone. Since then, Rob has put the old phone up on eBay. Perhaps the original thief will have enough money—after posting bail—to legally purchase the phone he liked so much.
