This recently occurred. I had the cable guy over to fix something, and the guy just walks in without taking of his shoes. I mean c'mon, it's carpet, it wont kill you. Wow, the guy was inconsiderate, considering that he left muddy footprints on the carpet that took me hours to clean. argghhh. whew, i needed to let off steam. Did this ever occur to anyone else (in a different situation)?
Did you ask him to take his shoes off? If he refused I would have made him wait so I could lay down some paper bags or something. If guests don't want to take their shoes off then that's too bad they can't come in. It's a respect thing.
Welll... u see the thing is... i guess its an asian thing... most of my dutch friends dont take their shoes off when they enter the house... and what did u expect... i dont think the cable guy wont take off his shoes every time he walks into someones place... unless u insist
it's not an azn thing in my op. it's a sign of respect to first ask whether or not to take of one's shoes before entering a home. My non-azn friends do that and I do that as well.
Ok...if you are a guest at someones house of course u ask... but do u really think a cable guy is gonna do that? And believe me... dutch people dont automatically take their shoes off... its normal to walk around in the house with their shoes on
hmm.. I guess it depends on the customs and practices over where you live.. and whether visitors are expected to do so.. If not, then he can't be blamed unless you request him to do so..
Thats a little broad saying westerners dont know. All my westerner friends remove their shoes without ever asking or having them asked whether to remove the shoes or not.
Ok...sorry for that....im talking about the ones I KNOW.... its not like they refuse to do it... i mean they do it when i ask them to do it... anyway...so ur western friends did it automatically when they first came to ur house? cant imagine that but hey whatever
It's more a matter of how anal you are about the cleanliness of your place. Some people ask you to keep your shoes on so you don't get your socks dirty, or they'll give you a pair of slippers, if there's no carpeting then it's not as hard to keep clean. I'll allow you to keep your shoes on downstairs, or give you a pair of slippers, where there is hardwood/tile, but no shoes upstairs where there is carpet, helps keep the bedrooms clean.
Maybe Montreal has a lot of asians.. so people are more aware of the practices of others. But in general, difference in customs can often create misunderstanding... so its probably better to be more open when dealing with someone of another ethnic group..
Yep, I usually just ask the new non asian people to take their shoes off when they come to my place... and they dont mind
@ MissAngie, Oh well, not that it matters but yes, it is common for westerners to wear their shoes in their homes. Maybe i influenced them with my chinese ways. hahahah
yo wind...montreal don't got more asians than toronto those cable guys..or w/t hardware guys...they dont cae about taking off shoes...they give u no respect yet they charge u a lot!! eff this! should complain
I think it's more of the "blue collar" workers. Like the plumber, for some reason they always look like slobs and when they're under the sink, you get a full view of their buttcrack. Yuck....
